I've been looking over this book (The Witch's Handbook) since I got it for Christmas, and was kind of brainstorming ideas about how to use it in the Realms and if its a good fit.

Given that we know that some arcane healing can occur in the Realms, but that arcane magic isn't ideal for healing, the fact that the class gets some minor healing ability doesn't bug me too much. For some reason the fact that they are spontaneous casters seems to work for me in this regard especially, perhaps implying that "prepared" arcane casters really have a hard time learning healing magic because their thinking is so codified.

At any rate, I'm picturing that a lot of rural areas would have witches in the Realms, but that some of the actual witches of Rashemen might be of this class. Obviously the Rashemi witches couldn't take item creation feats as their bonus feats, but that's not a major problem.

Despite this, I don't picture the Rashemi witches being the primary people with this class, but rather rural humans, copper and green elves, humanoid spellcasters (orcs, goblins, etc).

As a spontaneous caster, they would be eligible for taking some wizard levels and qualifying for the Ultimate Magus PrC as well.

Anyway, any other thoughts that anyone might have for this class? Any holes in my logic thus far?

I don't know this particular class, but it sounds somewhat similar to the one from the Netbook of Witches. Those have a strong flavor of being "called" to service and having a direct link with deities or other extraplanar beings, so I'm using those witches as demon/devil worshipers (on the evil side). Additionally, I see a lot of the more chaotic gods as having witches devoted to their powerful servants (such as Selune having a coven of witches in contact with an eladrin or something). I particularly like this arrangement because you get some aspects of divine magic mixed with the arcane, but you don't have demon lords granting divine spells per se.

I like the idea of using this witch class for the goblinoid races. I don't really like the Adept class and think they need a better "witch doctor" sort of class.

Yeah, I like this because they don't really replace clerics, as they can only heal some minor wounds, cure some poisons, but when someone gets really banged up or they need to have a major curse or disease or affliction (like ability damage) hit them, the cleric is clearly the guy you want to go to.

I don't have much to say except that I like the idea of a backcountry witch who is part wizard, part herbalist, maybe part healer. Like some others I think of a "witch" as being a wise woman of sorts.
