But even for the purely fantastic stuff, like dragons and magic and the guy in powered armor with the ethereal sword, it still looks like it could really be happening someplace. Some individual pieces of artwork by other people share this trait, but with Elmore, it's pretty much all of his art. With other artists, there is usually something about their work that keeps you from being drawn in, and thus you do not get the same feeling (or at least, I do not).
I couldent agree more. Elmores art has always "grabbed me". Like you said it has a realistic element to it that just flat makes it stand out |

I can't say that any of the gaming supplements has a cover that jumps out at me, although there's very few that are bad or ugly.
As for the novel-covers my favourite would have to be Therese Nielsen's original cover for Heirs of Prophecy. I have a thing for oil. |

I have to agree with Wooly, Elmore is the best of the lot.
I must admit I like the older TSR era artists better than those of the modern era, but I recognize that some of that preference is nostalgia. That said, Lockwood, England, and O'Connor are some of my favorite artists of the new era. I also like the work of Andrew Hou.
My favorite FR cover art would have to be new Drizzt covers by Lockwood or Mysteries of the Moonsea cover, which I think is by O’Connor.

The Hunter's Blade Trilogy or the Sellswords for me. The orcs in the HB look AWESOME and Klauth and Jarlaxle are cool too. |

I always thought Lockwood was pretty amazing, gratuitous skin notwithstanding. The Dragons of Faerun is a neat cover. His comment on his website about how it's a painting to teach people in skimpy outfits the prudence of standing behind stone pillars was entertaining as well. |

My two favorite accessory art covers are Forgotten Realms Adventures and Waterdeep and the North. My favorite novel cover is Darkwalker on Moonshae. |

I remembered it. I consider Elmore, Easley, and Caldwell to be the Big Three of fantasy art, with Parkinson not too far behind. But, even among the Big Three, Elmore is, in my opinion, far and away the best.
Two things always bugged me about Caldwell, though. One: though I like half-naked women as much as the next guy, I often felt his way of showing skin was gratuitous. Two: What the hey was up with the round red gem that's in almost everything he's done?!?
Valerie Valusek is another good one. She's been mentioned here many times. Not everyone likes the current art direction, and a lot of us preferred the wonderful art we so often got from TSR. |

As for me, I've loved an awful lot of FR covers and art, though the ones that scream "the Realms" the most for me (i.e. most evocative) are
Clyde's cover for the Azure Bonds novel;
Keith Parkinson's original horseman on the 1E Grey Box;
Jeff Easley's cover for Empires of the Sands (FR3);

Both the covers from the gray box would be high on my list, as would the cover of the 2ed. Shining South book.
As for novels, I always liked the cover for Soldiers of Ice. There is also book one and three of the Moonshae series. I could go on, but at this moment these would be my favorites. |
