You have heard that some of the information you seek exists in some books that are placed in the cellar, and the monks have told you to seek the strange thief hiding down there fore more information.
You walk down the stairs to Candle keep’s cellar, its dark and when you reach the bottom of the stairs you can hear somebody breathing in front of you.
The dark cloaked man hiding in the shadows in front of you says : Welcome to Candle keep´s cellar stranger, I hear that you seek knowledge of the Adventuring Companies, Orders and the chosen in forgotten realsm. Here are the tome, when you are done with it, put it back on the shelf behind you. You turn around and see the dusty bookshelf and when you turn your head the man in front of you is gone.
This is a updated tread and some of the information are taken from the old thread: (Adventuring Companies / Orders / The chosen. Replies 208 / Read 4280 - Started 25 Sep 2006 )

2.3.1. I keep seeing references to "Chosen" of various deities. What do you mean by "Chosen"?
Some deities, most notably Mystra, have given one or a small group of their dedicated followers special powers; these are called Chosen. The Chosen of Mystra are most well known, and derive some special benefits because they actually hold a portion of Mystra's essence within them. They are Elminster, Khelben, the Seven Sisters, and perhaps others yet unrevealed. (Azuth may or may not currently be a Chosen, although it's virtually certain he was before he became a god. The founder of the Cult of the Dragon, Sammaster, was a Chosen who went bad.) Mystra's Magister is NOT a chosen (at least not while holding the office of Magister). Noumea Drathchuld, a recent Magister, is now a chosen, as is Alvaerele Tasundrym, a Magister who held the office from 576-592 DR).
Other known Chosen: Cadderly, Chosen of Deneir (from the Cleric Quintet by R. A. Salvatore); Qilue Veladorn, Chosen of Eilistraee (as well as Mystra...it's a complicated story); Jeryth Phaulkon, the Chosen Star of Mielikki. We should also take care not to forget Fzoul Chembryl, chosen of Xvim.
The Elder Circle of the Emerald Enclave are also chosen - the Chosen of Silvanus. The names of the three chosen are:
Shinthala Deepcrest Lady Shadowmoon Ashenford Torinbow

Posted - 05 Aug 2007 : 18:04:39 I was told about Noumea Drathchuld as another Chosen of Mystra and Malik el Sami yn Nasser as Chosen of Cyric...
That's not the first time I see that Qilue is both a Chosen of Mystra and a Chosen of Eilistraee. I'm not a specialist about Chosens but it seems to be paradoxical no ? The same about Shadowmoon , Ashenford & Shinthala who are three-god-chosens (Silvanus, Mielikki & Eldath) |

The Chaperons of the Moonlight Tryst are a fellowship of romantically inclined rogues and rangers who discretely safeguard young elven lovers from those who would take advantage of their distraction and/or innocence. Members of this merry band are also called on occasionally to facilitate secret meetings between lovers of rival houses or to aid them in eloping against their family wishes.

The info about the order of Barae of Mezro was updated - Thanks to Xysma and the Master of Mischief which I quote:
More information about the Barae of Mezro from The Ring of Winter.
Osaw- The King of Mezro, Osaw became a bara when he was 85 years old, hence his aged appearance. Osaw has been a bara for 1500 years. Ubtao granted Osaw the power to remember everything he sees or hears.
Kwalu- Kwalu is the son of Osaw, and a strong warrior. Kwalu has been a bara for about 100 years. He has the power to create a ravenous swarm of locusts that devour anything in their path.
Dhlamass Rayburton- One of the five founders and the first president of the Society of Stalwart Adventurers, Rayburton journeyed to Chult in search of the Ring of Winter. He is the first non-Tabaxi to become a bara. He has been a bara for about 1200 years. His Ubtao granted power is to comprehend and converse in any language.
Alisanda Rayburton- Dhlamass' daughter. "Sanda" has been a bara for about 500 years. Ubtao granted her the power to possess warm-blooded animals, including the mighty Children of Ubtao.
Mainu - Mainu, she of the golden eyes, was given control over the water of the Olung River
Ras T'Fima- Has been a bara for 1500 years. He was given the power to control the weather.
Ras Nsi- One of the first seven chosen of Ubtao, Ras Nsi was given the power to muster the dead. ------------------------ spoiler-------------------------------- Isis
The Sisters of Life serve in the Guardians of Skuld along with the clergy of Anhur and Osiris in protecting the capital city. The Shield of the Lady is a fighting order of wizards, clerics, and specialty priest who join adventuring companies active throughout the Old Empires and beyond that serve the will of the goddess (whether they realize it or not). The material priestesses of this order serve to shield Mulhorand’s heroes from the forces of barbarism and evil.
Nephthys
The Order of the Golden Coin is a elite sisterhood of priestesses who serve as bodyguards, caravan escorts, and temple sentinels. Their fees are steep, but it is a rare adversary who can pull off a successful theft under the watchful eyes of the Sisters.
Osiris
The order of the risen sceptre is an elite order of paladins and lawful good rangers who have been raised by the clergy of Osiris after been slain while engaging in honorable combat with the clergy of Set. The Brotherhood of Those Who Smile in the Face of Death (usually known as the Deathgrins) was founded by the survivors of the battle that drove the werecrocodile followers of Sebek from Mulhorand and destroyed the city of Sekras. The Guardians of Skuld see Anhur
Sebek
There are no knightly or military orders associated with the faith of Sebek. All werecrocodiles serve Sebek directly, and all war on the humans who seek to invade their rivers and swamps. Werecrocodiles have occasionally with other denizens of the swamps. Most of these alliances end with one or both groups turning upon the other when the alliance is no longer convenient.
Set
The Fangs of Set are a wide-ranging network of assassins, spies, and thugs whose membership permeates every level of Mulhorandi society. The Fangs may not be able to displace the pharaoh, but they intend to rule the country from behind the scenes in the name of their deity, nonetheless. In addition, Set’s clergy sponsors numerous small bands of mercenaries, assassins, and thieves, but they rarely survive more than a few years.
Thoth
The Order of the Ibis Feather is a sacred fellowship of 77 scribes who serve the pharaoh of Mulhorand directly. Members are recruited from the elite of the Scribe’s Guild of Gheldaneth and the clergy of Thoth. The Brothers and Sisters of the Quill are an order of wizards and specialty priests who actively adventure beyond Mulhornad’s borders. The Quilliasn, as they are known, are charged with recovering lost knowledge and destroying those who seek or acquire the key to Thothian mage script and should not have it, such as wizards who are not citizens of the Old Empires.
Tiamat
The Serpent Guards are a fellowship of warriors and crusaders active in Unther and the surrounding lands. Fanatically devoted to the Dragon Queen and her spawn, the Serpent Guards guard the cult’s temples and hunt down and kill interlopers. The Knights of the Five-Thorned Rose is an elite order of high-ranking crusaders drawn from the ranks of the Serpent Guards. Dedicated to the destruction of metallic dragons, these dark warrior-priests are the bane of good-aligned dragons throughout the Realms. In the last decade alone, the Knights of the Five-Thorned Rose are believed to have slain a score or more of the metallic wyrms.

Posted - 19 Jul 2007 : 00:50:30 Fenmarel Mestarine:
The Fenmaren church has no affiliated knightly orders for obvious reasons. Among the Or-Tel’Quessir, every able-bodied adult of the tribe fights for the Lone Wolf. Thus, in a sense the entire tribe acts as the militant arm of the faith. |

Posted - 19 Jul 2007 : 00:46:09 While no formal military orders are associated with Everan Ilesere’s church, countless bands and guilds of elven and half-elven rogues have been founded in honor of the Trickster. A notable example is the Knaves of the Missing Page, a fellowship of elven spellfilchers (Mage/thieves) based in the Vale of Evereska but active throughout Faerun. Knaves specialize in the recovery of elven magical artefacts, spell scrolls, and spell tomes that have been acquired by other races, particularly humans. |

The Knights of the Killer Whale are an order of Sashelan crusaders dedicated to the destruction of the evil races of the sea. The order is based in the Citadel of the Seven Seas, a great hollowed-out undersea volcanic plug encircled by the Mintarn archipelago in the Sea of Swords. The Lances of the Sea Unicorn are an order of clerics, crusaders, and Aquarians (specialty priests) who garrison a series of nine undersea citadels and numerous smaller redoubts that stretch across the floor of the Sea of Fallen Stars.

Posted - 19 Jul 2007 : 00:15:10 Corellon is the divine patron of many knightly orders, many of which claim to trace their heritage and membership back to the Time of Flowers. Notable orders in the past have included the Knights of the Golden Wyrm, The Blade of Sahandrian, the Fey Staghorns, and the Swords of the Seldarine. On Evermeet the Wings of Yathaghera, the Knights of the Alicorn, the Weavers of Bladesong, and the Vassals of the Reverend Ones are all pledged to support the Protector in the defense of the Green Isle. Few orders have remained on the mainland of Faerun since the Retreat began in the year of Moonfall (1344 DR), but one of those that remain, the Swords of Evereska are the most notable for their unwavering defense of the alpine vale.

Posted - 16 Jul 2007 : 00:57:23 Again, as I said in the other scroll, I think it's important to note that Fox hasn't been confirmed as a Chosen of Erevan. It's speculative at best. Also, Lathander doesn't have a Chosen either. The details about Jhelek aren't supposed to be taken as a literal confirmation that Lathander has a Chosen. |

Posted - 15 Jul 2007 : 20:23:05 Boats, Ships, and other Vessels in Forgotten realms
Ansiber's Wrath is a particularly decrepit, leaky old galleon. - In Marsember Blackasyre’s Revenge - Striker, named for a long-ago member of the City Guard who desperately wanted to captain a naval ship. When he got the chance, he was so disabled by uncontrollable, nigh-constant seasickness (“lying on his face retching onto the decks from beginning to end of the voyage, except when he tried to get up and fell right back down again,” as one seahand put it), that he had to give it up. Heartbroken, he resigned from civic duty, hurled himself into mercantile trade, and in a bare three years had assembled a profitable merchant shipping fleet. Whereupon Usmro Blackasyre commissioned shipwrights to build three “fighting caravels,” and gifted them to the navy. Both he and they are gone to graves with the passing years, but this new striker was named in their honour. Master Rhantaeros Naullaer (LG male Illuskan human Ftr6) captains it ably; he’s a calm-in-battle veteran of more pirate skirmishes and chase-down-smuggling-ships-and-board actions than anyone else currently on active navy service. - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy Blade of Espar - small coastal runner- In Suzail Breezerunner, a cargo ship - Source : Under fallen stars novel Dragon - Cormyr's largest warship, is well equipped with ballistae and firepothurlers. - In Suzail Everwind - which is referenced in chapter 19 of the Whisper of the Waves novel. Galley of the Gods - Artifact galley rumored to have been created by the god Enki - 200 foot long, 30 foot wide. Can fly. Its prow is carved to look like Tiamat chained and can breath a ball of lightning. Was stolen from Unthalass by some pirates sometime in the late 1350's - Old Empires Ginger Lady, a Shou Ship (not sure on exact port of call.) Heart of the Heavens, chapter 51 of Lies of Light.Determined, chapter 63 of the same novel. Jie Zuo or Masterpiece a Shou Lung ship that is built in the last few chapters of part 2 of Whisper of the Waves. Kissing Maiden - Unknown type [Pirte Isles - Inner Sea]- Captain: Teldar (Cyclopedia of the Realms (1st ed) old Grey Box Cyclopedia p 69 2nd Col. Raging Tears - Unknown type - Pirte Isles - Inner Sea- Captain: Urdogen "The Red"(Cyclopedia of the Realms (1st ed) old Grey Box Cyclopedia p 69 1st Col. Lance of Wheloon - small coastal runner- In Suzail Maelstrom -Vurgrom "the Mighty" uses/used a caravel named Maelstrom - Wind's Slave - Stirge - Two of his other three ships are named in Pirates of the Fallen Stars: another caravel (Wind's Slave) and a drakkar (Stirge). Utterly non-canonical, I called the third ship a caravel and named it The Prideful Bo'sun; Realms authors are cordially invited to use that name so that I may lay claim to having created a (very) small piece of the Realms. Mist-Walker - Captain Carreigh Macumail's ship is the first one mentioned in Elves of Evermeet, and is a ship sailing the Sword Coast. I couldn't find a referance to the type of ship however. Narwhal “Galleon” in the Ring of Winter was named. page 49 of the novel. Ratclaw - an independent Caravel out of Selgaunt. Ready Gauntlet - striker [Waterdeep] – (Ed Greenwood/Candlekeep) Master Araskro Minthul Rilaunyr's Warship was once known as the scourge of the Easting Reach. The ship herself is a three-masted ninety-footer. She carries a sailing crew of thirty, and a hundred fighting marines. Mini-ballistae line her ironbound sides; a catapult shoots from the flying deck in the rear, and two massive ballistae are directed over the prow. The real power of Rilaunyr's Warship lies in magic. When fully manned, she carries six magic-users, levels 7-13, and a complement of twelve clerics of Poseidon, one of whom is a 15th level high priest. - In Sarshel (Impiltur) Sarran’s Sword: Striker, named for a long-ago bold captain of Waterdeep, who loved to chase down, board, and slaughter pirates. An unlucky ship, with a history of sideswiping docks and moored vessels, crew deaths from rigging falls at sea, and a crazed sailor who stealthily murdered comrades aboard for most of a season before being caught (and executed). A fast vessel, captained by Master Halthos Belkairel (LG male Tethyrian human Ftr6, of a fast-rising, wealthy, “wannabe-noble” merchant family specializing in horsebreeding, cured meats, and brass musical instruments). - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy Sea Horse (dromond): 200 Crew, 30 Marines, and five 4th-level mages and one 9th-level mage. This ship is commanded by Captain Morgalshym (11thlevel thief), and its first mate is Brawn (8th-level fighter). The mage is Curnetheres, an outlaw of Luthcheq who decided to join the crew to get revenge against the city. - From Old Empires (Chessenta secection) Sea Jewel (dromond): 200 Crew, 100 Marines, and three 5th-level mages. This ship is a heavy marine support vessel. Its captain is Bendensar (6th-level thief), ex-thieves#146; guild assistant of Mordulkin, and his first mate is Lorien (5thlevel mage), a female elf who ran away from Yuirwood for a life of adventure. - From Old Empires (Chessenta secection) Sea Quest (dromond): 200 Crew, 50 Marines, and two 7th-level mages. This is a fast attack vessel whose mages have gust of wind spells for the sails; the ship has a reinforced hull for ramming. This vessel is meant to cut off a ship if it tries to flee. Its captain is Sturion (10th-level fighter) and his first mate is Perithor (7th-level fighter). When the Sea Queen#146;s fleet gets within attack range of a vessel, they fly her colors - From Old Empires (Chessenta secection) Sea Snake - a large and well-armed war caravel- In Marsember Sea Spriteform in the novel Passage to dawn Shining Sword - Golden Paladin- Protecto – The Sea Fist Company out of Waterdeep hires out their ships as escorts to vessels sailing the Sword Coast. The ships are only referred to as "old warships" that they bought and refurbished, but they are named Shining Sword, Protector, and Golden Paladin. Protector is related to be missing along with a merchant galleon from Neverwinter called Gallant Prince. Information from FR5 Savage Frontier. The Bent Tankard - Source : Under fallen stars novel The Bloody Umber - a "sailrig" (large wooden raft fitted with a trisail and sweeps) coaster. The Defiant - Capt. : Dansforth - Source : Darkwell novel The Floating Axe - Striker, sailed by an all-shield dwarf crew (the lone one-race ship in the navy; Admiral Hornwynd frowns on “single-race crews” and the heightened rivalries that might develop in his ranks because of this, but Piergeiron accepted this donation from a wealthy Waterdhavian dwarf merchant, Lorlan “Stonesides” Duraxe, because it was politically expedient to do so. Thus far, the dwarves have proven to be clumsy but fast-improving sailors, and the best board-and-brawlers in the navy, under their captain Torsan “Burntbeard” Hailstone (LG male shield dwarf Ftr7). - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy The Gallant Lady - Transport (cog), newest and largest of the naval transports, the Lady was built as a supply ship only, although one cabin roof was reinforced to take a mounted catapult if one was ever needed in future. Veteran Lady Master Valla Dorminthar (LG female Chondathan human Clr4[Valkur]/Exp3: sailmaker and rigger; Str18), a huge, beefy woman of prodigious strength but kindly, motherly disposition (affectionately known around the navy as “the Cow,” but never to her face) calmly and patiently trains (and retrains) crew after crew of recruits, taking them out into the teeth of line squalls and gails to give them experience in rough-seas fighting and escort work. The Gallant Lady rolls worse than any other ship in the navy, but has two sealed sidehulls (pontoons) mounted on arms thrusting out from either side of the ship (Valla’s innovations), that (like a catamaran) check the worst of its rolls and keep it from capsizing.Crews love Valla but hate her ship. - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy The Kissing Mermaid - Raker, an old and patched veteran of many sea-battles that groans and yaws when under sail, but somehow weathers the fiercest storms and keeps on battling. Its crew has a reputation for lawbreaking, roguery, and reckless tactics - - but they also have a reputation for victory, and for appearing when most needed to aid sister ships and “win the day.” Lady Master Baerestra Mooncastle (CG female Tethyrian human Ftr 7/Ari2) captains a crew of misfits, from disfigured former slaves to half-orc “shes” to mongrel folk. “Lady Castle” is scarred and homely, but dresses like the most beautiful of fashion-conscious nobles, and cursed and jests and plays pranks as outrageously as any legendary pirate of minstrels’ tales. - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy The Mount Waterdeep - Transport (cog), the closest thing to a “typical” transport the navy has, marginally the largest and sturdiest of eight very similar ships built at the same time by Arnagus the Shipwright for the navy, at a time when blockades had been threatened by both Luskan and Amn, some sages were warning of an imminent orc horde, and the Masked Lords wanted to make certain that Waterdeep could provision itself by sea if it was beseiged. Like its sister ships (which include The North Wind, The Mount Sar, The Mount Araddyn, and The Mount Hellimbrar), this cog is usually bristling with catapults as it sits docked in the naval harbor, or wallows along the shore participating in mock battles. It is captained by Master Ghorkan Daznar (LN male Calishite human Ftr6), who is typical of the capable, laconic naval men promoted from the ranks for their calm competency. - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy The Northwind - Capt. : Grunnarch the Red - Source : Darkwell novel The Princess Carbella, a versatile boat owned by Brill Kilmer. "an 80' clipper moored at the end of a pier, equipped with a special removable crane and block and tackle for hauling heavy items up from the sea bottom or bringing in heavy nets" The Ready Gauntlet - Striker, a “small but fast and energetic, pouncing” ship of the city’s navy, battered but many-times-repaired, and typical of the bulk of Waterdeep’s strikers. A veteran crew of casually-dressed misfits is captained by Master Araskro Minthul (CG male Chondathan human Ftr5), a grizzled and garrulous sort who is of the firm opinion that if he fell overboard, the crew would just carry on without him, as “they’re all more than ready to captain or helm any ship in this fleet.” - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy The Red Scourge - Big Honking ship - Primarily in the Seas around Thay. Source: Spellbound Rilaunyr's Warship - Flagship of Impiltur's fleet - Once known as the scourge of the Easting Reach. 90 footer with 3 masts, tons of high level clerics and powerful mages. There are at least 3 rings of air elemental control amongst the crew to make the ship zoom. - Bloodstone Lands The Sword of Storms - Raker, the slowest and largest ship in the navy, its upperworks rusty-red and sheathed in overlapped, hammered-down old shields and armor plate because it’s still fitted with a lone heavy catapult constructed to hurl loads of rocks coated in flaming pitch. The Sword bristles with railings, has a ram reinforced by more timber bracing than any other ship in the fleet that has pierced far more enemy vessels than the rest of the navy combined, and a crew of old stiffnecks and gray-tusks (a term equivalent to saying in our real-world terms: “stiff-upper-lip, walrus-moustachioed stalwarts”). They consider themselves the iron backbone of the navy and the true “best ship,” and are encouraged in this belief by the “Old Rock” who captains them: the monacled, grizzled, wintry-eyed Master Izidd Rocklar (LN male Chondathan human Ftr10/Exp4: maker of catapults and bombards). - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy The Unbolden - a full-rigged cog out of Telpir The War Whelkin - Transport, a shallow-draft, broad-beamed, wallowing vessel that’s almost a barge (once it was a huge “sterncastle cog,” but it was topheavy, kept heeling over and capsizing, and was abandoned by its foolish Amnian owners [who’d ordered all the extra decks be built atop what the shipwright had given them] in Waterdeep harbor, upside down and full of water; the authorities claimed it, dragged it to a city shipwright, and had it cut down to its lowest deck, to yield the Whelkin of today) . The “Wallop” (as all the navy calls it) has metal-clad crenellated sidewalls for troops to fire from behind, metal plates hammered at odd overlapping angles all over its decks to inhibit fire (from enemy incendiaries), and six light catapults mounted on its decks. Admiral Hornwynd recently gave orders (after it almost sank in rough seas) that it was never to sail out of the harbor again (in some of the naval defense plans, it is to sail into a “sea gap” in the breakwaters and anchor there, blocking passage for other vessels, and it carries six anchors and chains for this purpose; these orders still stand). Its crew is a mix of the rawest recruits and the most ailing, leathery old salts, captained by Dallance Askalur (NG male Illuskan human Ftr5) a foppish wannabe-noble of great good looks and elegant wardrobe and manners, who’s in disgrace with Admiral Hornwynd for running a fast raker onto rocks during a mock battle, and has been reassigned to the Wallop as punishment. His drawling ease hides his rage and frustration well, but the entire navy knows it’s there. - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy The Widow's Ire - a merchant's galley that sails the Sea of Fallen Stars, mentioned in the 2nd edition Player's Guide to the Realms. The Witch of the Waves - Raker, currently the ship with the most elite reputation in the fleet, due to superb performance in boarding and battling pirates. Its crew are swaggering “seabloods” (veteran sea fighters with “masts” [“kills”] under their belts), and they are captained by Master Amandas Talkurr (CG male Illuskan human Ftr9/Rog4). A fast, sleek, newly-rigged, dark-hulled ship. - Ed reply´s on Waterdeep's navy The Wraith of the Inner Sea - From Old Empires (Chessenta secection) This is a fleet of four ships that serve as privateers along the coast of Chessenta. Their commander is the half-orc "Sea Queen" Kreodo, who is documented in the 'Personalities' section. Her ships are the following: Sea Queen (dromond): 200 Crew, 50 Marines, and eight 3rd-level mages and five 6th-level mages. This Kreodo's flagship, captained by Kreodo herself. The first mate is Rutters (8th-level fighter). - From Old Empires (Chessenta secection) Telgontan Horn - caravel [Luskan] – destroyed by fire by Ruathym war vessel. FR0 p.XXX Thomdor's Fist - a large and well-armed war caravel - In Marsember

Sunken ships in the Realms Elfmaid - Liriel Baenre sailed on the Elfmaid, which I believe was renamed Leaping Narwhal after Captain Hrolf’s death. Since I only have the last book of that series handy, I can’t find out what kind of ship it is, which would have been described when first encountered.- In the list of SoFS following wrecks Fleetwind raker [Waterdeep] – (FRML/AJA Jun2004) Captain Phaelar Roaringhorn Kissing Mermaid - raker [Waterdeep] – (Ed Greenwood/Candlekeep) Lady Master Baerestra Mooncastle Nadyra’s Glory – often mistakenly called “The Lost Princess”, it sunk in 926 DR off the coast of Tsurlagol while carrying an Impiltur Princes on her way to wed Crown Prince Reigard of Cormyr. - In the list of SoFS following wrecks Seafang - raker [Waterdeep] – (FRML/AJA Jun2004) Captain Nalvvyn Royalhorn Seagrey - raker [Waterdeep] – (AJA) Captain Laevhrara Mourndelorn Shadowake – was the flagship of the guildmaster of the Shadowmasters of Telflamm, sunk in 1353. - In the list of SoFS following wrecks The Emerald Dragon – It mentioned as being sunk in Waterdeep's harbor in FR1 Waterdeep and the North. No mention of the type of ship other than its obviously a merchant ship of some kind. The Golden Crown - A Calishite galleon that wrecked off the western shore of Gundarlun in FR5 Savage Frontier. Thepurl’s Diamond – sank while transporting a captured lich in 1367… the lich is probably still in it’s ‘crate’. - In the list of SoFS following wrecks The Storm Sprite out of Cormyr - Captain Fowler - (Sunk by a dracolich). Valashar’s Bane – Named after Azoun I’s victory over Valashar, and is described as a very fast running cog, lightly armed, used primarily to overtake pirates. It sank in 389 DR, but the Crown Prince and his crew all made it ashore. The village of Dawngleam now exists upon the landing site of the survivors. - In the list of SoFS following wrecks

This fighting order established by Cyric had no leader. It is rumoured that the two clerics in charge of establishing admission standards into the order could not agree on what those standards should be and were engaged in intricate plots to kill each other off, since each was convinced that he was right. They both pretended that Cyric appeared to them and gave them precise orders, but the orders given to the two priests were contradictory. It was originally feared that when the order finally got off the ground, Cyricist crusaders would certainly lead fighters against rival churches for the glory of the Prince of Lies. The choosing of the order's members is in part done by Tyr himself; as part of the process of ascending to the order's ranks, a candidate must pray and receive a vision from Tyr. A vision of Tyr's warhammer shows the god's favor and permits immediate acceptance into the order. A vision of Tyr's sword, a traditional sign of the god's disfavor of the viewer, means that the aspiring Hammer has failed in some way and must go on a quest to atone before entering the ranks of the Hammers. (This does not mean that he has lost his powers as a paladin; he simply did not meet the far more stringent requirements to become a Hammer.) A successful atonement quest allows the aspirant to join the Order as though he had seen the vision of the warhammer. Currently, only 13 Hammers are in active service, a testament to the purity and power required to become one of the order.
The Marines of the Seven Seas : Valkur
Valkur’s temples sponsor a fleet of war ships garrisoned by the Marines of the Seven Seas. This relatively modest navy has ships stationed in many ports along the Sea of Swords and the Sea of Fallen Stars. They are dedicated to combating monsters of the deep. One sect of Valkur’s service, known as the Sailors of the Heavenly Seas, have left Faerun to sail the endless reaches of space. These spelljammers rarely return to Faerun and view Valkur as a god of travelling and exploring more than a god of the watery seas.
The Order of One Thousand Nightmares : Velsharron
The Order of One Thousand Nightmares is a company of nightmare-raiding swordwraiths who haunt the Field of the Dead. Although the ghostly warriors have battled each other for centuries, Velsharron’s clergy have recently mastered powerful spells enabling them to organize the contentious spirits of the ancient warriors into a necromantic knighthood of nearly 200 undead mercenaries whose ranks continue to grow. The aims of the necrophant masters of this unholy army are unknown.
House Jaelre : Vhaeraun
House Jaelre is a former house of Menzoberranzan, driven away from the city for being a house of heretics. They are currently based in Minauthkeep, an abandoned elven fort in the forest of Cormanthor on the surface world.
Jaezred Chaulssin : Vhaeraun
The Jaezred Chaulssin is a patriarchal house of skilled assassins. Their goal is to rid the drow of the tyrannical rule of Lolth and her priestesses. They are "based" in the ruined drow city of Chaulssin, from which they got their name. In truth, they only visit Chaulssin to hold secret councels. They are actually spread throughout most of the upperdark, with agents most major drow cities.
Dragon's Hoard : Vhaeraun
The Dragon's Hoard is a merchant band that has formed a small community on the surface. Their main base, however, is in a deep dragon's lair in the notorious Underdark trade city of Skullport, situated beneath the great human city of Waterdeep.
Orders in forgotten realms / Mulhorandi & Untheric Pantheons
The Order of the Watchful Lion : Anhur
The Order of the Watchful Lion is a fellowship made up primarily of crusaders (but counts some clerics and specialty priests as members as well) that serve as the front line in the defense of Mulhorand. Members often take extended leaves to adventure beyond Mulhorand’s borders and report back on developments in neighboring countries. The clergy of Anhur also includes hundreds of informal fraternities roughly corresponding to companies of troops in Mulhorand’s armies.
The Guardians of Skuld : Anhur / Osiris / Isis
The Guardians of Skuld is an order of guardians from the priesthoods of Anhur, Osiris, and Isis whose existence has been formalized since the Time of Troubles and whose leadership has reverted back to the temple of Anhur from the clergy of Horus-Re.
The Fellowship of the Mithral Mountain : Geb
While the church of Geb sponsors no military or knightly orders, most adventuring priests of Geb are members of the Fellowship of the Mithral Mountain. The members of the society are united in their search for a near-mythical mountain laden with countless veins of mithral.
The Lords of War and Victory : Gilgeam
Prior to the Godswar, Gilgeam was served by a host of military orders. Only a small fraction of the most powerful order survived his destruction and regrouped in the Citadel of Black Ash with the surviving remnants of Gilgeam’s clergy. The Lords of War and Victory have reformed into a elite order of over 200 crusaders. They guard the secret fortress gate and drill at night on the Black Ash plains below. They are known for their ebony-hued scale mail or full plate armor (depending upon the situation) and full helms shaped in the image of Gilgeam’s visage.
Claws of the Sun : Horus-Re
Following the Time of Troubles, Horus-Re founded an order of paladins known as the Claws of the Sun and the Ankh. (Previously all paladins in Mulhorand have served Osiris.) This brotherhood is young and untested, but its ranks are expanding quickly. Unlike the main-stream clergy of Horus-Re, the Claws are fanatic devotees of the Lord of the Sun who care nothing for the day-to-day politics of Mulhorand.

The Veterans are employed mostly to keep the free cities safe from pirates. Strategies and Tactics: The Veterans prefer to work for local governments and merchants. While the Drake himself is not an expert in military matters, he has gathered a staff which is. Personality: This company is motivated primarily by a desire for enough gold to live on. They never betray clients and have not been in existence long enough to make enemies. Logistics: The Veterans have a variety of arms and equipment, though their standard is scale mail and long sword.
Nonhuman Companie
Though not yet .standard. in the Realms, nonhuman companies in general are be-coming more common as more races become curious about the world around them.
In contrast, elven and dwarven merce- naries have existed for centuries, but are becoming less common as the population of those races dwindles. Most elves and dwarves would rather not be paid for end-ing their lives early.
Most nonhuman companies are made up of ogres or goblinoids. Some groups form spontaneously when an entire tribe decides to hire itself out as a mercenary corps; these groups are usually led by their chieftains or shamans. They might be motivated by greed, or lack of food and other necessities may drive them to seek employment.
Other nonhuman mercenary corps are founded by powerful human wizards ormonstrous leaders, inspired by greed, a need for revenge, or some similar motivation. These leaders usually dominate the company completely, holding its mem-Ybers almost as slaves.
The Blue Sigil.
Type: Standing, fixed Base: Mog.s Keep near Longsaddle Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N
The North Leader: Mog the Fist Government: Dictatorship
Number of Members: 450 General Alignment: Neutral evil History: The Blue Sigil ogres became a merce ary company about 15 years ago, when imminent starvation drove their leader, Thorog, to find a way to support his tribe. Thorog.s tribe had been raided several times by adventurers, some with unique symbols, some paid by nearby towns to kill ogres.
Thorog, a rather smart ogre, reasoned that if other people could get paid to kill ogres, ogres could get paid to kill other people. He created the company.s sigil and required all members to wear it for unity. The symbol, a blue circle crossed by a crescent moon and a lightning strike, is also displayed on armor and the back of helmets (so the ogres know not to stab other members in the back).
The savage Blue Sigil had problems getting hired at first, but they have gained a reputation for living up to their agreements. They charge 500 gp per week and enjoy looting.
The Blue Sigil is enemy to the Bloodaxesand the Chill.
The Chill.
Type: Standing, fixed Base: Chill Tower in the Lurkwood Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N
The North Leader: Ardenor Crush Government: Military hierarchy
Number of Members: 650 General Alignment: Lawful evil History: Though he appears to be a normal hobgoblin, Ardenor Crush is a reincarnated evil warrior and should betreated as a 10th-level fighter. After he found himself in a hobgoblin body, Ardenor formed a band to exact revenge on those who had slain him.
He found his friend Grangor (the 13th level wizard who reincarnated him) and gathered most of the goblinoid troops who survived the Second Battle of Urml (see I14, Swords of the Iron Legion). With these allies, he hunted and killed the group of adventurers who thought they had ended his evil ways.
The company.s symbol, worn on the up per arm, is the brand of a fist around which is the tattoo of a white nimbus.
The Chill has a number of enemies, in cluding the Bloodaxes and the Blue Sigil ogres. Though on poor terms with most of the orcish tribes in the region, they are sometimes hired by them.
Clan Hammerhand.
Type: Standing, fixed Base: Ravens Bluff Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N
The Bloodstone Lands, the Vast Leader: Garren Hammerhand Government: Clan
Number of Members: 200 General Alignment: Lawful good History: Clan Hammerhand is a long-lived dwarven clan that was established in Earthfast and in Ravens Bluff when it was still Sarbreen.
After the Horde Wars.in which several Hammerhands participated.the entire clan determined to resettle in Earthfast, which would involve removing a number of the goblinoids there. To support the clan and gain battle experience, several Hammerhands hire themselves out as mercenaries.
The mercenaries maintain offices in Ravens Bluff, Tantras, and Telflamm. To distinguish themselves, they wear beads (ranging from simple stone to jeweled gold) in their beards and hair.
All of Clan Hammerhand.s mercenariesare infantry, wielding a variety of weapons; hammers are the most popular by far, but there are a number of battle axes and footman.s picks as well. They are excellent at underground maneuvers and quite good at sieges.
The Claw.
Type: Standing, fixed Base: The Trollmoors in the North Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N
The North, the Underdark Leader: Killithor the Alhoon Government: Dictatorship
Number of Members: 100 General Alignment: Lawful evil History: The Claw is a company of trolls. The members of the Claw wear no symbols, and are directed in battlefield action by hidden masters, presumed by most to be the wizards who are contacted when somebody wishes to hire the mercenary company.
The real leader of the Claw is Killithor the Alhoon, an .illithilich. as described in the Menzoberranzan boxed set. Alhoonare undead, psionic mind flayers who can cast spells as 9th-level wizards. Killithor has a council of four normal mind flayers under his control. These in turn communicate with the four human wizards who direct commerce for the Claw, demanding a flat fee of 1,000 gp for any job lasting up to one month.
The Alhoon and his officers are very secretive and seldom seen. They participate in Claw battles, but never risk their secrecy. Killithor has never been known to participate in a battle directly, and has been seen only by his illithid council.
The Claw was formed to spread destruction and may eventually act as a body of shock troops for some nefarious plan of Killithor.s.
The trolls of the Claw have no choice on the jobs they take. Their tactics are very basic, though mental commands from the leaders direct them. With their regenerative ability and attacks, the trolls are very effective troops.
The Red Thunder Mercenary Corps.
Type: Standing, roaming Base: The Hordelands Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N
The Hordelands Leader: Glory Black-hoof Government: Military hierarchy
Number of Members: 150 General Alignment: Neutral History: The Red Thunder was formed primarily by centaurs from the Chondal wood after they participated in the Battle of Five Crowns in the war against the ar canalothrkhetep (see I14, Swords of the Iron Legion).
Glory Black-hoof was a minor officer in the centaur forces; meeting and fighting aside members of other races piqued her curiosity, as well as that of other centaurs. After the wars, she and about 30 other centaurs formed a small mercenary company.
The Red Thunder saw action in the Shaar, along the Vilhon Reach, and in the Bloodstone Lands. More centaurs were recruited into the band, which moved its operation into the Hordelands after the Horde Wars. There, they came in contact with the nomadic centaurs of the steppes(see the Horde boxed set), a tribe of which joined the Red Thunder. Though the nomads were not used to female leadership, they have learned that Glory is a masterful tactician. The company consists of three units of 50 archers each; one unit also carries nets and long swords, another sabres, and the third lances. The company prefers to at tack with bows, and will retreat to lead opponents into ambush. The Red Thunder Corps works primarily as caravan guards, for which they charge a reasonable fee of 150 gp per week.
Servants of the Royal Egg.
Type: Standing/recruits, roaming Base: Rethild Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N
Chult, Tethyr Leader: Sladdis (Ghassis)Government: Military hierarchy
Number of Members: 200-500 General Align ment: Neutral History: These spear wielding lizardmen are unusual among mercenary corps because they are slaves. This group is rented out. to whomever offers the lizard king Ghassis sufficient gold. The groups normal cost is 10 sp per member per week, to which Ghassis adds up to 1 gp per slave per week for hazardous jobs(those in which he expects 25% or greater casualties). As long as the gold is right, Ghassis has no qualms about sending the company on even the most dangerous missions, but expects payment in advance.
Ghassis is a shrewd, well-traveled individual. It is rumored he has connections to spelljamming lizard men who supply him with large numbers of strong and in-telligent slaves. Wise employers provide strong leadership and explicit instructions for the corps because the Servants show little initiative. Their field leader Sladdis is intelligent, but is trained to follow orders rather than give them.
The Servants will follow simple, directtactical orders with single-minded deter-mination. These mercenaries are known for their intense sense of group identity, and few of these implacable reptiles have the imagination to truly fear much of anything. If an employer is interested in hiring a mercenary company for a dangerous, thankless, yet straightforward task, the Servants of the Royal Egg should be considered.
The Shard.
Type: Standing, roaming Base: The Orsraun Mountains Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N Leader: Londa Ironhead Government: Clan
Number of Members: ? (less than 50)General Alignment: Neutral evil History: The Shards may exist only in memory now. Two seasons ago, a party of adventurers stumbled upon a scene of carnage, noting three red dragon corpses and a large number of charred ogre bodies with the distinctive obsidian-edged weapons that marked members of the Shard. Eagerly searching for treasure, the adventurers found only scorched ground and a few stray coins, leading them to believe that at least some of the ogres had escaped.
The Shieldbreakers.
Type: Standing, fixed Base: Shieldbreaker Citadel south of the Deepwash Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N
Tethyr (?)Leader: Koranan Splitoak Government: Military hierarchy
Number of Members: 320 General Alignment: Lawful evil History: The Shieldbreakers are ogres named for their action upon refusing to support their chiefs slaughter of a human village. They still refuse to use shields in battle, but instead wield two-handed weapons, especially bardiches.
Led by the veteran mercenary Koranan Splitoak, the Shieldbreakers accept any job save one calling for the murder of unarmed foes (which they consider dishonorable). This corps is one of the most respected in the Realms.
They ask 50 gp per day of action.
Silent Rain.
Type: Standing, fixed Base: Evereska Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N The North, the Stonelands Leader: Nightshade Government: Military hierarchy
Number of Members: 100 (?) General Alignment: Chaotic good History: Little is known of this mysterious group of elven archers, for few have survived their deadly rain of arrows Of those few, none have seen even one of the infamous mercenaries. The company is recognized by their arrows, which use red-striped black fletching and uniquely shaped heads.
Consisting solely of elves, the Silent Rain is one of the most exclusive of mercenary corps. Caring little for gold and fame (they ask only 100 gp per week), Silent Rain will agree only to jobs that either promote elven causes or involve destroying humanoids.
Prospective employers must leave written word (in elvish) near Evereska, and the Silent Rain will send a representative if interested. Little is known of their leader, but she is supposedly as deadly and as beautiful as her namesake.
The Teeth.
Type: Standing Base: The Stonelands Current Sphere(s) of Operation:N The Stonelands, the Goblin Marches Leader: Jadron the Fang Government: Dictatorship
Number of Members: 100-200 General Alignment: Chaotic evil History: These ogres are led by one of the cruelest mercenary captains known, Jadron the Fang. Jadron is utterly ruthless and is as much feared and respected by his own warriors as by his enemies. Over the course of his short and bloody career,Jadron has made many enemies and no friends. Nightshade, leader of the Silent Rain, is particularly vehement in her hatred of Jadron and the Teeth.
To join the Teeth, an ogre must go through a rigorous initiation, including filing all teeth to sharp points. The only way to leave the Teeth is by dying.
The Teeth are loosely organized into units of 19 warriors and a sergeant who reports directly to Jadron. These units can be employed separately or combined to form a larger force. The Teeth favor quick, decisive combat and favor striking from several directions at once to confuse and frighten their foes. The Teeth are especially fond of biting their opponents, leaving distinctive marks on their victims.
This company hires itself out for any job for 2 gp per warrior per week.
The Order of the Blue Board
It is said that anything can be purchased in Amn, and that includes mercenaries. The best and most famous mercenary recruiters in Amn belong to the Order of the Blue Boar.
The Blue Boars were once headquartered at Castle Spulzeer, but moved out several years ago when the Spulzeer family began to fall apart (see FR3, Empires of the Sands for more information). The leaders of the Order the seven Boar Heads. No operate from the sprawling Castle Blue just outside of Riatavin.
The Boars Heads approve the member ship of Swords in the Order; they can also expel them at will for unprofessional conduct 400 Swords all wealthy experienced veterans belong to the Order, spread throughout the cities of Amn, Calimshan, Tethyr, and the Sword Coast. Though all the Boars Heads are male, a few of the Swords are women.
Employers seeking the aid of the Blue Boars must apply in person at their Amnish headquarters. The council of Boar Heads decides whether or not to accept the job. If they do accept, they inform the Swords, who may then apply to take part in the operation Based on the employer’s offer, the Boar Heads determine how many soldiers an bleads are needed for a job, then review the applicants from the Swords. If there are too many applicants for a given job, membership seniority determines who gets the job Each participating member receives a share of the bounty.
