Hordes of undead, unending streams of orcs, or overwhelming armies of men. It could happen in anyway, from any enemy. We'r talking about last stands. Maybe not completely to the end, theres always the possibility of last minute rescues, or an escape route that was unseen before. A great example of an amazing last stand is the new movie "300" thats due out in March. The book gates of Fire is the same story, but delievered more realistically. Basically, Im curious to know if any PC's out there have any stories like this to share, or if any DM's could tell one from their point of view. Even ideas about what anyone thinks would make a great "last stand" type battle would be interesting. I find these types of battles interesting, and I thought it would be neat to hear of a few straight from the Realms, or at least think up some ideas for it. So if anyone has anything to share, please do. And thanks in advance! |

Long, long ago, we had a party of adventurers exploring an ancient burial mound, and we ended up finding a teleportation portal in the crypts. Unfortunately, through mischance and bad planning, we had managed to basically awaken a whole mob of wights. After a few early level drains, the party figured that they couldn't make it against the wights, and started back to the teleportal.
Eventually a veritable army of wights was on its way, and it was likely the end of the party, but my barbarian figured that the hallway leading to the teleportal was narrow enough for me to block the path while everyone else made it through the portal. I stayed in the way of the wights, taking them on one on one, but also taking so many level drains that I couldn't do much, and as the wizard went through the portal, he fired off a lightning bolt.
Now, back in first edition, a lightning bolt could be insanely dangerous as it would ricochet off of walls and the like if it hit a solid surface before it reached its full length, but in this case, the bolt damaged the beams to the room, collapsing it, and killing me so that I wouldn't be killed by the wights, and then raised as one of them.
That's my personal best last stand, hope its along the lines of what you were looking for. |
