Posted - 07 Nov 2006 : 19:27:23 Alright guys well it's my first time actually posting anything here.
I am starting to run a Cormyr Campaign. it is taking place a year or so before all the main stuff that happens there. sorry for not having exact dates, i am at work
so the adventure begins in Tilverton. there are alot of increased goblinoids and giants in the area. as well as an increase in zhent population. after 6 weeks game time tilverton will be destroyed by earthquakes, and castle crag will be overrun and destroyed allowing this area to now be controled by the monsters and zhents. they are currently searching for the ancient tomb of the lich who is responsible for the last goblinoid overrun of cormyr over a 1000 years ago. it was rumored that he had the goblins overrun cormyr in order to get them killed. he also had there souls all absorbed by an artifact he was creating. the artifact is rumored to have the power to destroy any living creature(excluding gods) with a touch.
so it is up to the PC's to find this tomb first. as well as stop the invasion of cormyr. the zhents have backing from a few red dragons in the area who would like to see select people and cities destroyed.
i still need to fleshe everything out. but personally imo it helps to lay it out and get some outside help to look at things i may not have seen, and also that may not have considered and my pc's might, so that way i am not broadsided
thank you

plus, I don't see why a Banite would dress in disguise, since they want to openly spread the fear of Bane (and of themselves ;)
Well, sometimes, working behind the scenes towards specific goals would further the causes of tyranny and/or fear a lot better than an overt appearance would.
That is true. |

Posted - 28 Nov 2006 : 21:44:36 Help fleshing out the adventure:
You could have Goren Fallstrike Human blacksmith who has retired to Tilverton after leaving Zhentil Keep. He knows he heard something during his years in the army's upper ranks about an invasion in this coming season, but he can't remember due to pushing all bad memories of Zhent out of his mind. Goren tries to just keep his head down and make horseshoes and metal work for the town, but agents of Zhent come and "pull him back in". They frce him to spy and do work for them undermining thetown's defenses ( building shoddy hinges for gate doors, flawing swords for the guards, etc.) and the PCs can stumble uon this, confront Goren and make him tell them what is happening, but not WHEN. IF the PCs go to the guards, they don't believe it, they take the warning as adventurers looking to get a free meal by "helping take watch" etc. and brush them off.
Poulon Sendrigall female spy for the Town of Tilverton. She works directly for the ruling council/ruler and reports to the town constable.
Pcs find her body out in the woods and very mangled. Seems she spied upon a wilderness meeting between Zhents and Red Wizards. or maybe spotted some Banite mages preparing in the woods. PCs bring body back into town and maybe she has an item in hand that might link to the lich or something to that nature. PCs must take item and contact sage get more info on the lich..
You could have the PCs doing small menial task for Tilverton, like clearing out a small mine entrance from goblins etc, which will give them a chance to possibly find or see something that might link to the upcoming war/tragedy.. Maybe miners get trapped within a few mine shafts, from the lich or banites practicing their earthquage spells. have a higer level mage or someone earcan come with PCs in rescue party and 'sense or detect" magical use..hinting to the cause... PCs are used to free trapped miners...
Just some things to make the adventure last.

oh i completely understand the part about being weary of including so many, it's not to say they won't betray certain people. like the red wizards pulling out there support once, and if the dales are called upon to help or if it looks bad for them, or even if they get found out. the drow are only in it for there own purposes. ie.. myth dranor's magic and the area there. and we know how the red wizards feel about you if your not getting done what they need you to get done or even what you told you would do for them.
the best part about evil organizations and races working together is they turn on eachother easily.
as for the earthquake, i forgot to explain. the PC's will see it done. they will be arriving back at the town one night and they see a few figures floating around the outer perimiter of the city, they then see two figures, one in red one in yellow, float un in the middle of the city. the one in yellow (high priest of bane, will use a scroll or two of earthquake to destroy the city. while the one in red will be flinging fireballs at different parts of the city.
it will be known to the pc's if they talk to the nearest towns that "luckily the couple of high priests of gond were down here trading and purchasing goods to build up there temple."
but thank you so much for helping there. i am downloading the tomb of horror sto look through.
please keep the advice coming or even the criticisms
How about black AND red for the Banite HP? They are the traditional colors of Bane in 1e/2e... plus, I don't see why a Banite would dress in disguise, since they want to openly spread the fear of Bane (and of themselves ;) |

Posted - 07 Nov 2006 : 21:13:57 I'd make the earthquake an unnatural disaster (i.e. magically or otherwise caused), rather than naturally occuring. I believe Ed or someone else may have answered the question of tectonic plates a number of months ago but I can't remember when.
A classic adventure hook is after the disaster a rift opens, the adventurers find a crowd gathered around all going 'oooooh'. Can remember a number of SNES RPGs where it happened (Final Fantasy 5 sort of, Secret of Mana, I believe Mystic Quest and so on...), and similarly in the film War of the Worlds with the pod thing.
I like the Temple of Gond idea. I'm guessing it's a high level campaign given the lich and the fact that there are a number of organisations working, but be wary of including every evil power group as allies and every good group as allies, you can even include some betrayals (particularly the drow) and power groups working at cross purposes. I never got to include it in my campaign but I was a particular fan of evil organisations working with the PCs against other organisations, where it may actually benefit the party (and the greater good if they're into that sort of thing). Prime example would be Sememmon and his woman (Ashemmi) helping out Khelben in Blackstaff. |

Posted - 07 Nov 2006 : 20:56:03 well i am running it in 1st edition. the game i plan on running till high levels. it starts at level 1, there are sub adventures going on all over with this. and by the time i see tilverton destroyed i see them about level 4-5, which in first is decently powerful. then i see them going after a few bases and by the time they are finding the tomb prolly level 7-8, there will be some decent battles but over all they will be focusing on the covert stuff to help out the big battles.
i forgot to put that since myth drannor is so close and the main sides of it are cormyr/dales and zhentalkeep area, the drow have taken an interested in helping the zhents. the red wizards since they have a thing for the dales b/c of elminster have some interest in pincering them so they are providing spell support. so cormyr is pretty much getting flanked and towards the end of it, it will be up to the PC's to help cormyr wiggle free from this hold.
not to mention the Temple of Gond has been converted and is helping the zhents, they were promised the right to be able to rebuild the cities destroyed and add onto the other cities using the money in the cormyr vaults.
if you have questions or what not please let me know. i prolly forgot alot of information. but it's up in the head.. but it looks bad infront of players to go " umm... blah blah blah" makes you look unprepared. so i would rather talk it out.

Posted - 07 Nov 2006 : 19:51:33 Sounds like a fun, classic set-up.
Random comments: 1) Check out Tomb of Horrors for the lich tomb, its free available at the wotc site. 2) Be careful with the big disasters early on, unless you have a follow-up ready. You increase impact with by building tension. 3) Cormyr: A Novels and Death of the Dragon should give you some ideas. Heroes of Horror is a nice supplement for war campaigns.
