I'm about to start work on an adventure for a mega-session we've got planned for next month and wondered what type of adventures you prefer:

Save-the-World
Hack and Slash
Monty Haul
Serious Role-Play

Personally, it depends on the mood I'm in. My own scenarios tend to be serious role-play but I'm thinking maybe it's time for a change. I think I'll go for a straightforward, no-brainer, loadsabeer hack-and-slash dungeon crawl and surprise my party - they need wakening up anyway

I don't know yet, had a change of arrangements so it's happening in November. I'll be back with news after the event

Ah, sounds like a sort of power play I would not want to play either. In my opinion finding a magical item is much more fun if they are rare than when you are already loaded with them. And what is a better excuse than going on an adventure because you need the money to afford this or that.

Monty Haul is generally seen as an adventure/campaign style where the main focus is to get as much loot as possible without much regard to a story line. Characters in such a game style tend to run around with zillions of magical items and cartloads of money. Not too unlike the guys in Knights of the Dinner Table (Hackmaster)

I did no mean to say that in serious role-playing there is no room for action. I sincerely hope there is. I just do not like the heck and slash, just rolling dice and stating intentions and not really more.

i always love to play the serious role play, but i also love the battles.. i think a good game needs all of those topics, but not so much the save the world thing..

About my preferred type of adventure, I must say I'm the serious type of role-player. I'm not sure what is meant by Monty Haul so I cannot say if I would enjoy that or not. I'm certainly not in for an adventure that is only hack and slash. Though maybe, if I knew it up front and it was just for the bloody fun of it, I could be persuaded. I once played a save-the-world kind of game, but it took us half a year to find out that the world needed to be saved. We never found out from what it exactly had to be saved, for we quit adventuring before we had the time to find that out. So I have no real experience in that either.

In my opinion (I’m not humble at all ) in a serious role-playing table-top game you’ll need to be able to trust the other players. If there is no trust, it will be difficult to play your character to its limits. Further you’ll need discipline. To illustrate: a character of mine was kidnapped and replaced with a clone. The party ‘saved’ the clone and thought they had their party member back. But due to playing not very seriously, they did not look into the changes of behavior their party member displayed. I had fun playing a much more evil character, but the party was in constant trouble because they had a clone in their midst that briefed every bit of information to the enemy. It was fun, but if we had joked less I would not have to have gone to such extremes to make the party realize there was something wrong with my character.

In this context you can maybe understand why I do not play in table-top games anymore. Finding a group that is serious in role-playing and is that disciplined… I don’t think I could find one. And maybe my standards are indeed too high

The PbeM games I'm playing in and the one that I'm running are all very role-play oriented. Yet there's a decent amount of 'sword-swinging' in it.

The type of game, with the time delay in reacting, sometimes makes it almost equal to a very exiting book where you can't wait for the follow-up book to appear. Or a good TV-series that just stops with the right cliff-hanger.

Though one can't see the faces of the other players, I know there's some anxiety when it comes to actions. The times I've had after reading a DM-post: "Oh Sh@t, what's she up to..." And then sending in a reply where you almost can't wait to see the result.

For table-top games I also prefer the role-playing over the sword-swinging. Though I sometimes feel the dice-rolling tends to get in the way of things (eventhough it can be exciting as well).

I normally go for the serious role play but I just fancy a change. My party also expect me to go for the serious role play so I thought going for the "sword swinging" approach might catch them by surprise

It'll also give me a bit of a chance to relax and have as many beers as they normally do.

Man how I remember that one, it was such a joy to see someone sweating so much over a role play situation.

By the way, I was bricking it in the Wagon at the time ;-)

I much prefer the Serious Role-Play method of gaming. Its much more fun to get so involved in a role-play situation and really feel for your charactrer. I never really believed in hack-and-slash nor Monty Haul but i guess it may be a way to let of some steam for some people, but at the end of the day its just rolling dice upon dice...

I remember once running a campaign and adventure up in Daggerdale where the adventurering party were attempting to get into Dagger Falls which was heavily occupied by the Zhentarim at the time, they had to be smuggled in on a caravan, most were in the back amongst crates and barrels, whereas one character sat up with the driver (a mute NPC). To cut it short I played a very persistant Zhentilar guard who fired questions on the character as to his business in Dagger Falls etc. The player was totally taken off guard and unprepared for this and struggled to stay calm and give answers.

After the ordeal the Zhentilar let the caravan pass, the player was mentally exhausted and at that point we had to take a break

I loved every second seeing them all actually sweat for the fear of being caught!

.....compare that to charging in with swords swinging....... ill go for the chat method every time!
