...just discovered this thread...

i have a hound archon bound into one of our pcīs backgrounds:
the character in question is a halfling thief with several "question marks" in his past (father vanished on a mission, ancestry not quite clear, etc). quite late in his carreer (around level 8; game started at lvl.1) he found out that he is not a halfling but a blickish(1): a halfing "subrace" whose ancestor was ulmagnus, a hound archon.

after more than one "real life" year of gameplay, lots of confusing and twisting plots and two levels later he encountered ulmagnus as an ally in a climatic battle at the end of a major subplot (which took up ca. one year of roleplaying), but the player didnīt remember the name "ulmagnus", so his character did not recognise just who stood before him!
during the battle, ulmagnus was among one of the few losses the "side of good" suffered. after the battle, with a little help of another npc, the identity of that strange celestial being was revealed to the "halfling" thief, who was totally flabbergasted (one of the greatest roleplaying moments of that character!). now he is plagued by self-reproaches: a depressed halfling, agonizing over his failure...

i plan to stage a "rescue-mission" at a convenient moment somewhere down the road, leading into the lower planes to get the hound archonīs soul plucked out of the claws of several nasty demons.

(1) a race from mythic races (Fantasy Flight Games) who can blink and go etheral (among other things) as they rice in level.

...long story short: i LOVE that particular celestial being!

Yeah, the only problem with fallen celestials is you have to use them sparingly or it becomes an overused technique. Unless you balance it with redeemed fiends... but then that might make the game crazier than it already would be!

I also like the Fallen Hound Archon from the Fiend Folio, that can be a nasty surprise for players who are familiar with the normall benevolent hound archons.

also their appearance is cool i think...with their houndish features and that greatsword of them. today at my forgotten realms game, my players came to one of that celestial creatures... a really strong one which is NPC and has character level... i ended the game for today at that point , it was really a sweet end for that play... the celestial will of course aid my players to solve a mystery in a village in the east of Luskan and in the south of Mirabar... the village called Duskgrove...

My Cleric of Helm used to summon them almost exclusively. They were great aids and over time using summon ally, he managed to equip them with a bit of magic and made them really fun.
This of course only works if you are using the rule that you summon the same guys every time in the same order... I love that rule.
