Posted - 10 Jun 2005 : 02:53:59 I need information about magic items such as wands, scrolls and staffs. What are the limitations for arcane and divine spellcasters? Can a divine spellcaster use a staff of fireball or vice versa an arcane spellcaster use a wand of cure light wounds? |

Kentinel, I don't know if this is the case with 3.5E, but I was under the impression that Magic Domain also granted the cleric the ability to use arcane wands, scrolls, and staffs. I could be wrong though.
My error, I forgot to look at Granted power
"Granted Power
Use scrolls, wands, and other devices with spell completion or spell trigger activation as a wizard of one-half your cleric level (at least 1st level). For the purpose of using a scroll or other magic device, if you are also a wizard, actual wizard levels and these effective wizard levels stack. "

Does it enable you to use arcane scrolls, wands etc.? Most probably the spells will not be on your spell list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Magic Domain Spells 1. Magic Aura: Alters object’s magic aura. 2. Identify: Determines properties of magic item. 3. Dispel Magic: Cancels magical spells and effects. 4. Imbue with Spell Ability: Transfer spells to subject. 5. Spell Resistance: Subject gains SR 12 + level. 6. Antimagic Field: Negates magic within 10 ft. 7. Spell Turning: Reflect 1d4+6 spell levels back at caster. 8. Protection from Spells M F: Confers +8 resistance bonus. 9. Mage’s Disjunction: Dispels magic, disenchants magic items." Not many wands with these spells running about. However as far as it goes, Domain spells would be on the individual Cleric list and wands with Divine Domain spells could be used by divine casters. Spell Completion (scrolls) requires abiltity to cast spell, if not high enough level chance of mishap. Spell Trigger requires being on spell list, if not high enough level chance of mishap. Command Word works for anyone. Use Activated works for any permitted to use the item. A Paladin nor Cleric can use a Bardic Cure Light Wounds scroll, because a Bard CLW is arcane and not divine. A Wizard or Sor can not use a Bardic Cure Light Wounds scroll, because the spell is not on their arcane spell lists. Of course a Bard can not use the far more common Divine Cure Light Wounds scrolls either because those scrolls are not arcane. At least this is how I understand the rules in current version (setting aside Use Magic Device skill).

Is the cleric with magic domain is subject to arcane spell failure from armor when using an arcane scroll or wand; or the spell is considered divine?
If you are using the 3E rules, then the cleric is not subject to arcane spell failure because the spell is still considered divine (at least, that's my impression). |

I consider all Domian spells divine and as such not subject to arcane spell failure.
Using a scroll or wand are not subject to spell failure from armor no matter the caster, the hard work was already done. The spell completion negates removes the posiblity of spell failure from armor, there is the too low to cast that can cause failure.
I do not believe divine can use arcane specific items, nor acrane use divine specific items. Refer to Bardic healing scrolls. |

Posted - 03 Jul 2005 : 18:30:02 I forgot about the Magic Domain. Yes, you can use scrolls and wands as if you had the Sor/Wiz spells on your spell list (if you take this domain). You can also use arcane scrolls, but you still have to make a caster level check as if your level were 1/2 your cleric levels (plus any Wiz, but not Sor, levels you might have) |

Posted - 01 Jul 2005 : 19:59:34 Here's the deal (I'm ignoring the Use Magic Device skill):
Scrolls--arcane casters use arcane scrolls, divine casters use divine scrolls, and the spell from the scroll needs to be on your spell list (if you're a sorcerer, the spell needs to be a spell that a sorcerer can cast, etc.)
Wand and Staff--The spells need to be on your spell list (see above)
Other (ring, wondrous, etc.)--Anybody can use it (some limitations might be given in item description). |

Posted - 10 Jun 2005 : 03:26:57 The basic rule is: Divine casters can use divine items. Arcane users can use arcane items. Any one with Use magic device can try to use any item.
It gets a little more involved as to caster level, the identification and off course magical items that can be command worded by anybody. |
