Posted - 05 Aug 2008 : 00:00:18 So, I'm running my first ever campaign (I was always a player back in the day). We're starting with the Realms conversion of the Keep on the Shadowfell, using fourth edition rules and beginning in Ches of the Year of the Ageless One. We've met once so far and I think everybody had a good time.
Guess I'll start this off by offering you the same "meet the party" handout I gave to the players on day one. I'd met with them each for a couple of hours one-on-one in the weeks leading up to the first session.
You can download it here as a .pdf, or if that's annoying, give a shout and I'll typety type in the details. |

Posted - 05 Aug 2008 : 17:10:47 Oh, I see that I wasn't being clear. That's what I handed out for all the characters to read about each other. The actual background material on each character that the individual players and I worked up is much more extensive, this is just what the characters would come away from their initial meeting knowing about each other.
I'm going with a "legacy" idea for why they're all working together. In my version of the module/FR adaptation, the adventure began at a taphouse in Highmoon, which was run by the wife of an NPC that has a small role in the published adventure. She's a retired sorceress named Tatiana Brewer who formerly adventured with various parents, uncles, godparents, mentors etc of each of the characters. Eventually, I'll tie in various subplots and villains to something that the "parent party" did, or failed to do.
The players chose, found, or (in two cases) created their portraits, and I dropped those in along with screened images of their minis so we could tell who's who quickly on the table.
Oh, and the funnest moment from the first session was the very end. I printed out 4x5 character portraits of all the major NPCs to kind of hold up when I was playing them--the sorceress mentioned above was "played" by Judi Dench, or at least by a still of her in some period costume. Her husband is captive of a gnome at an "antiquities dig" in the Thunderpeaks, and when the party finally bested him, they're supposed to find a locket (which is also a minor magic amulet) that has her picture in it. Since I'm using the pictures, I got to print out a miniature one and pop it into the heavy prop locket on a chain I found at one of those everything's-a-dollar stores. So just as we were wrapping up, the sorcerer finds the locket, pops it open, and says, "It's Tatiana."
One of the other player's literally gasped and everybody went "ooh!" It was awesome! Very gratifying. |

Posted - 05 Aug 2008 : 16:58:41 Hey that's pretty neat, even though it's 4th ed which I don't much care for. The backgrounds are a bit short for my taste, but considering it's 4th ed, any attempt at a base for role-play is welcome. |
