Part of my current Evermeet Campaign, has once again headed underground back into the Underdark, from where the adventure series first began. As part of that campaign, I had decided to try my hand at introducing some monstrous class characters into the game. The creature type is an Illithid. The campaign has stopped for one month due to the fact, that a married couple in the game, is about to have a baby. This break in the campaign has therefore provide me the time I need to get some things into line concerning this new phase of the campaign.

So, after utilising the supplement Savage Species, and following the rules for monstrous PC's I had successfully introduced the basic character into the campaign. As I said the player had decided to go with an illithid and his beginning character was wizard. However before the break, he voiced his intention to now add a prestige class.

The PC mind flayer, will join the party once the campaign resumes, but the problem I have, is, how to introduce this new character. As DM I don't normally allow new players into the campaign once it has began, but considering the unique nature of the character and his race, I decided that this was something that I really wanted to try. The PC's chosen prestige class, which he qualifies for, is the 'Illithid Savant' from the Savage Species supplement. For those of you who don't have the book, an Illithid Savant is an Illithid who, in addition to consuming brain matter also acquires any new knowledge from the brain he consumes.

I intend to make the Savant a support member for the party, to replace the recently fallen wizard who had died back at the end of the Underdark campaign. The book suggests that the Illithid Savant at it's most basic, can be an academician, or wizard, due to the quest for knowledge these special Illithids undertake. The book also states no alignment requirements, so I am going with the CN alignment of the PC Illithid wizard. Also a special requirement of the class is that the PC must have consumed a brain from a creature of CR 9 or greater. Since he has already done this (don't ask for details), the only real thing left is his introduction to the party.

So what I am hoping for by posting this here is, that some of you may have some suggestions or ideas on how exactly I can introduce this character into the campaign and the party. At the point the campaign is at the moment, nearly any reason could be justified, but I just thought I'd ask here as some players may have some really interesting suggestions.

Thanks,

Good learning...

Thanks for that Bookwyrm, and yes, it had some interesting points.

Thanks. However, due to the fact that I love to use 'transfer' stories (thus exploring a fantasy world through the eyes of a contemporary American) I often have to resort to botched summoning spells. Well, what else am I supposed to do?

Though I actually have one where it was supposed to happen. I mentioned my Nine Elements story on another thread, as I'm sure you recall. That one's a transfer story. Nine people, one for each magical element. Now they have to figure out why they're there, who did it, what's up with this prophecy thing, and hopefully master their powers before they do something bad.

(They're able to trigger anything to do with their element by will, without a spell. For instance, the guy with Shadow nearly knocked himself out when he teleported by accident and slammed into a wall, and the one with Lightning let out a ball of electricity when he coughed, making his hair stand on end. Very undignified for the supposed Lords (and Ladies) of the Elements. )

It's not really about a prophecy, though, or about magic. They bring a whole lot of change with them, and the leader (the Shadow mage) isn't shy about democracy. (He's not going to topple the monarchy, but he's sure going to try to make the people as powerful as he can.) Can you say 'social upheaval' and 'political enemies'?

Plus, I'm having not one, but two wars in this story. The first one is basically a spat between countries. The second's going to be long, drawn-out, and very, very bloody. I'm having a lot of fun thinking of ways to use magic in a war on the scale of World War One.

There I go, though, getting off-topic. Waaaaay off-topic. This did not begin as a plug for a story . . . oh well, hopefully it's interesting for some people.

She, is not registered, but she does help me out with a few items in the Magic shop. I guess you could say, she is my inspiration .

Even though you lack experience in gaming Bookwyrm, I value any and all of your opinions, and since you write a lot of stories, you must have thought of creative ways for different creatures or people to meet. Even these ideas could help.

That's alright. I probably wouldn't be of much help anyway, with my lack of experience in gaming.

By the way -- which one is this gamer? Or is (s)he not registered?

I know what you mean about inspiration Bookwyrm, but a player from my campaign is a regular guest here at Candlekeep, and I can't reveal too much. I just need some basic suggestions.

Bookwyrm Posted - 30 May 2003 : 08:18:39
Well, I was hoping for a spark of inspiration from that, but the only thing I can think of that would be 'good' (campaign-wise) would be the party comming along as the illithid is just finishing up a *ahem* fact-gathering expedition.

The PC's are near the Drow city of Mandraagorus, a homebrew generated city, and the place from where the first Underdark campaign adventure began. There is a small illithid enclave nearby near the entrance to the Underdark. It is a temporary base being used by the illithids while they conduct their operations in Evermeet.

There are some other details but they ae not really relevant for this post, so...

Well, I guess it would depend . . . what part of the Underdark are they in? Or rather, what're the surrounding environs like? Who are the dominant species in the area, are there any power-points (I forget what they're called in the Underdark, but Liriel Baenre would go to one to 'charge' some weapons, remember?) nearby?
