I've been doing a lot of research in the area of the Thar and Moonsea. In many of the source materials, it talks of the Citadel being built in defense against armies from the Thar. Plus the supply lines would have to make it through the Ride to support the army.
How does this work exactly??
I don't see why an invading army of orcs or ogres would march through The Ride, opening themselves up to fast attacks from human barbarians, if their goal was to get into the northern dales/western moonsea region.
wouldn't it be better to march through the area between the Dragonspine and the Moonsea? This way they could take out Phlan as a nice morale boaster.
Zhentil Keep you say, cause they certainly can't ignore such a city, placing at their backs as they march past it? (Goodbye supply lines)
Well any forces they would have to deal with from Zhentil Keep, could be moved to the Citadel, since the Thar army has to march that extra distance.
Also Zhentil Keep wasn't around when the Citadel was built.
Also, if an army was going to go all the way to the Citadel, why wouldn't they just keep going and march through the low hills on the far western side of the Dragonspine.
I'm mainly wondering if there is some blocking agent I'm not aware of that keeps the Thar armies from marching past Phlan into the western Moonsea region. Is the Stojanow river impassible except for where the Iron route crosses it? |

I've given this rather serious thought myself.
My only response was that the Dragonspine Mountains have ways and means of allowing the humanoids to move through those mountains to attack rather than simply through the Ride.
My thinking is that the Citadel of the Raven may be USED to fight against attacks through the Dragonspine Mountains; but its original intent was vastly different.
The Citadel was used to defend most likely against attacks from the area of The Ride by an, as of yet, unidentified people living to the south of the Citadel. It is stated that the primary battlements face North and East...which leads me to believe that at one time, either the barbarians of The Ride were an aggressor, or that something before them was.
If the now vanished civilization/Kingdom that originally built the Citadel of the Raven only intended it to deter attacks through the mountains of the Dragonspine and against whatever people/threat existed in the lands of The Ride, then the Citadel of the Raven makes much more sense to me. |
