Posted - 27 Jan 2007 : 17:43:42 So I have a PC who wants to play a Thri-Kreen, however I'm not entirely sure if the Thri-Kreen culture on Toril is similar to the Thri-Kreen culture on Athas. I'm specifically talking about the Thri-Kreen tribes from the Rushing Hills in the southern part of the Shining Plains in the Vilhon Reach.
Further, are the Thri-Kreen on Toril the two legged variety or the . . . I think it was 4 legged anyhow, been a dogs age since I've looked at the 2nd ed Dark Sun material ;D
Thanks everyone! |

The Thri-Kreen of Athas always reminded me of the Green Martians from Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter Warlord of Mars series. I always loved that series when I was a kid.
Burroughs' Green Martians had 4 arms, green skin, big bug eyes, huge tusks and antennae on their foreheads that looked a little like Shrek's ears. They had 4 arms but the middle arms could double as legs, so sometimes they were bipedal but they could walk quadrupedal for more stability, or they could fight with 4 arms. Those novels were chock full of adventure and fun. I remember them very fondly.
Barsoom rocks! Highly reccomended, great flavor.
And yes, now that I think about it, they do remind me of green martians. I actually have a miniature of a Green Martian from the late 70's, I think it was ral Partha that was doing the Burrough's stuff. I loved it back then, but it is pretty ugly by todays standards.
(sorry for the off-topic remenice) |

You're thinking of the trin, or thri-trin.
The Zik-trin'ak have four arms and two legs.

Posted - 29 Jan 2007 : 17:35:11 yeah, all Thri-Kreen have 2 legs/4 arms just as of 3.0+ they have no abdomen.
Tor-Kreen are just Thri-Kreen who have settled down and formed a settlement, while Thri-Kreen are nomadic.

Thri-Kreen of Athas was an awesome book, especially the wallchart with all the subspecies. |

Posted - 29 Jan 2007 : 16:52:05 Some of the Limb confusion may come from the fact that the thri-kreen on Athas had sub-species or different "races" of Thri-Kreen, I think a Thor-Kreen or something similar was an advanced, more powerful variety. Perhaps some of them have 4 legs and 4 arms. I know I have Thri-Kreen of Athas at home so I can check. I'd be quite comfortable using the Thri-Kreen info from Athas in the Realms. I don't see the need for them to be all that different. As for the Psionics, that's definately Dark Sun influence, but even if you don't use a lot of psionics in your game, it could still be used to make them more alien. |

Posted - 28 Jan 2007 : 22:41:49 Thanks again everyone and (again) especially Sage.
I actually have another question after reading the thri-kreen section of Shining South, is the level adjustment in Shining South canon (ie. +1 for nonpsionists and +2 for ones with psionic abilities)?
Thanks again
Edit: Actually I get it now. A Thri=Kreen starts with 2 levels of monsterous humanoid (thus making them 2nd level) and they have a +1 level adjustment (making them level 3 equivalent). Psionic abilities just make the level adjustment +2 (though this part does differ from the Monsters Manual II |

Posted - 28 Jan 2007 : 08:04:18 As for the "Thri-Kreen Limb Debate"...
The thri-kreen of Athas are described as having four arms and two legs.
The thri-kreen of Faerun, most recently detailed in Shining South, are also described as having four arms and two legs.

Posted - 28 Jan 2007 : 08:02:34 The thri-kreen of Faerun tend to inhabit deserts and most other savanna-like regions around the Realms, as noted most recently in 3e Shining South. They're nomadic, just as the thri-kreen of Athas, and form communal packs, again, like the thri-kreen of Athas. And they also speak in much the same way as the thri-kreen of Athas, using clicks and pops and mandible communication when necessary.
The write-up for the thri-kreen of the Rushing Hills in Vilhon Reach relates with most of what I said above.

Posted - 28 Jan 2007 : 07:38:25 There are a few details about the Thri-Kreens in the Vilhon Reach supplement from 2ed. I think this can be downloaded for free from Wizards page.
I seem to remember them being four legged and more or less like those found in Athas. |

Posted - 28 Jan 2007 : 04:15:07 Never played in Athas, but I own most of the products. Just read the section in Shining South and they sound VERY similar. Nomadic Hunters, very alien culture from human norms, etc.. |

Posted - 27 Jan 2007 : 18:16:55 Judging bu the art in the Shining South accessory, I'd say they're two-legged (or maybe they're four-armed ). |
