Posted - 25 Jan 2007 : 09:09:34 Good morning to you all, Do you guys have experience with the other continents like the hordelands, Kara-Tur, Zakhara (Al qadim) and Maztica? So Yes, how was the experience? Good or bad?
I ask this 'cause I'm thinking to use one of the other continents to plaly in a far future. (starting in the other continent, or let the players travel to the other continent). At the moment I only miss the Maztica boxed set. So I'm trying to find one on Ebay
(collecting FR and Ravenloft stuff is kinda a hobby of me ) |

Posted - 31 Jan 2007 : 11:11:00 In my campaign i used Zakhara for a string os sessions, as Jorkens already said the aim is to introduce the flavour that makes that land unique - its harder than it looks like, after all after so many adventures in the realms its hard to get used to the new enviroment. In my game i used Hardby a town featured in a dungeon magazine and much lore from Al-Quadim and Dark Sun(Mostly) (The reason for that radical conversion was that i didnt want Zakhara to have familiarity with Calimshan).Hardby was installed as the sea-side city with lot of northern influence (not your typical zakharian town) the PCs where there to stop an upcoming war between Hardby and a much larger Zakharian metropolis ruled by a mysterious entity. I used Arabian music during the session and introduced desert sand to my players (gathered by myself in a recent travel in Dubai's desert called the Empty Quarter) The result was O.K but not great, the flavour level was 60% of what i accepted due to lack of experience is Arabian settings, it was a good RP time but not one of those Sessions to remember for the years to come.
The name of Maztica is appearing in my game as flavour for the time being (like the PCs enter a tavern and hear two sailors speaking about "the new world", or finding nobles wearing exotic jaguar-skin cloacks in Waterdeeps fashionable districts/shops) I dont plan a PC's visit in Maztica for the near future |

We already have Chult, which is loosely based on the jungles of Africa, but not so much so that it's a direct parallel to the real world. There are also already tropical savannahs in Faerun. |

Posted - 26 Jan 2007 : 00:46:13 I, too, am greatly interested in adventuring in other continents. So far, I have only found the Maztica Campaign Setting for free on the Wizards download site. I was told that Kara-Tur was also there at one time, but..

Posted - 25 Jan 2007 : 09:16:47 I used Zakhara a couple of times about ten years ago, it was OK, but not great. This was probably more the fault of me as the DM than the setting. The Al Quadim products are generally great, (with the campaign setting box itself maybe being the weakest), but the feel is easily destroyed during play. If you manage to get the Thousand and One Night feeling (I didn't)its great. The numerous boxes are still among my favorite products when it comes to reading-value though.
The others settings I have read and to a degree enjoyed as reading, but I have never had much interest in using them as presented in the boxes. Hordelands do have several interesting locations and stories though; the weak part is actually the horde itself and the tie-in to the novels. |
