I haven't run into this problem yet, but I am anticipating it.
I'm currently running a Mysteries of the Moonsea campaign, and my question is about the Hammer of Vorbyx. The legend says that if an ogre ever wields it again, that the tribes will unite behind them.
One of my PC's (a Fighter/Ranger/Cleric of Shaundaukul) happens to have the Jotunbrud feat. Now I realize that Jotunbrud speaks specifically to Giant blood originating in Ostoria, but in 3E ogres are a giant sub-type and speak Giantish as their racial language.
How might the ogres of the Thar react to him claiming the Hammer? |

That burns me ogurkh. The problem is there's a dwarf in the party. Are you tryin to kill us?  Then again nothin wrong with a little ogre bashin. Well this fight should be a fair fallhammer. |

Hello-
Certainly - if that course of action works for you - then go with it!
However - and I'm not intimately familiar with the info surrounding the hammer - I might also say that it is not the mere possession of the hammer. I would say that someone who wielded the hammer 'could' get the tribes to unite behind them. This would still require diplomatic 'missions' to the tribes - and demanding/asking to join him in somesuch quest or whatever - because *I* have the hammer - at which point they would probably be Very inclined to join. I see it more as a prophecy about who will end up uniting the tribes - not as a magical compulsion for the tribes to unite.
So - if y ou take this tack, there would be no automatic attacks etc just because he had the hammer. *Unless* he tried to unite ogre tribes underneath him. IN that case - I'd say go with what Wooly suggested.

If he's not an ogre, I'd have the ogres get mad that a "lesser" creature had dared lay hands on their sacred Hammer. This would lead to ambushes and overt attacks as different ogres either tried to get the Hammer out of his hands, and/or tried to claim it for themselves. In fact, even losing the Hammer might not end the attacks, because ogres might still be mad that he sullied the Hammer, they might want info on who did get it from him, or they might not believe that someone else claimed it, and so they're still trying to get it from him. |

hehehe...I'm getting the reverse 3PO-and-the-ewoks image. Go with it, I say. Throw a whole army of ogre worshippers at him, and see how he handles it, or gets handled by it. |
