need a bit of inputs on what i could use as a shakeup for my characters before i intruduce them to my first planned champaign ... they are in a mining town in pretty much middle of nowhere in Icewind dale with 73% shield dwarves, 12% humans, 11% gnomes and 4% other (arctic dwarves, earth genasi and a few gold dwarves) ... they are a barrellike gnome cityguard, tall and thin Human War mage (who just followed his mentor having no clue why they moved there) and a petite female human Rogue/Bard whos a pacifist :p

any inputs on what i could use as a shake together?

woohoo ... intraclergy conficts :D ... i don't think the problem is that the players can't take it ... i think the weak link here is me because last i was DM was back in 3.0 in 02 :p

going to be fun nevertheless :D

Yes, but even a hermit can have some ties to the old community. I was asking as I wondered whether the arctic dwarves could be the characters "safe-hold" if needed. It can be practical to have a sort of "Wild card" in the campaign that can be used both ways as needed.

PS Again; If you want to muddle thing seven further there can be evil priests of Auril that would prefer the goblins to destroy the village before exacting their revenge. These may also dislike the hermits position as Aurils voice in the area .

there are few arctic dwarves ... and even fewer that have another opinion than 'as long as they don't bug us we don't care about them' ... and my little Cleric of Auril is as said an hermit ... with no links to any arctic dwarves near by

I'm enjoying myself, so just ask if you want some more ideas or let me know when you think out something more.

PS what is the general feeling of the arctic dwarfs towards the village? Will the dwarfs prefer to see both humans and goblins removed from the area; in that case maybe the pc's should be a little careful when dealing with the dwarfs.

oohh ... Me likes it very muchy ... :)

What about an evil guildmaster among the dwarves of Citadel Adbar that wants to see the competition disappear. He gets the artifact out from the claws of a white dragon in northern Anauroch (who is searching for it as we speak) and gives the artifact to Durmarun the Outcast, a dwarven runecaster living in the Sine of the World. Durmarun sends Whalliryax, a Barghest controlled by an ancient netherillian demon brooch, with the artifact to the goblin Shaman. The Bhargest playing the role of messenger from the gods give the artifact with the orders to destroy the village.

When dis is done the dwarves will get monopoly and the guild master can lead his own expedition to get the mithril. Unknown to all the wizards of the Host-Tower has spied on Durmarun for a long time and they are very interested, both in the Mithril and the artifact.

:) ... nasty ideas starts forming ... i owe you one Jorkens :D

though it could be part of a greater plan ... if the village is lost then the Iron (and a sercet vein of nearly pure mithril, which my warwizard's mentor is 'disguising' as common iron) is lost as well causing the northen cities go get a shortage of metal and is gaining a weekness for a wellplaced attack ... :p ... now all left is to get a good idea of who should be the hidden villian supporting the Goblins
Jorkens Posted - 30 Aug 2006 : 18:18:48
It all depends on how much you want to make out of it; this could be a single adventure or be the first of a longer series. This could lead to further campaigns if you leave a few threads that the players can pick up on later.

What if the goblins used an artifact that later end up with the Arcane Brotherhood? There seems to be something hindering servants of the Ice Queen from acting directly against the goblins, are there further powers that lets the user control ice creatures (Much like the old Ring of Winter).

Sian Posted - 30 Aug 2006 : 18:13:51
might be an idea ... maybe a small group of Ice Mephits joining the fray
Jorkens Posted - 30 Aug 2006 : 18:04:45
Sounds great. One small idea that hit me. If they get into trouble with the goblins have a winter wolf save them with its breath. Then some tension over what the wolf will do, before the wolf tells them to seek out the Voice of Winter. This will give them some idea that Auril and her servants are not that pleased with the goblins actions.

Give an update later so I can hear how it turned out. This is turning out to be something I may use at a later date myself. Thanks for the ideas.

hmm ... built on, on your idea Jorkens ...

they are starting out in the rough winter (half an year before the FRCS) thats rougher than usual ... one night it snows that much that the half of the town outsite the mountain is covered with 10 ft. snow (9ft. in a night) and while they dig out they crash into a small goblin warband of Goblin warriors killing one of the old miners ... they should be killing the goblins and defend the building of an improvised tunnel system in the snow (it is afterall a dwarven mining town so there is enoungh to dig :p) ... and are requested to go to the 'Voice of the Winter' a Female Hermit (N Artic Dwarf 3 Cleric of Auril) a days travel north of the town, getting ambushed once on the trip by another small goblin warband. They ask her why Auril is that angry at the town and she looks somewhat confused since Auril didn't ask her to fix it, but by divination she find out that it aren't Aurils work at all but the work of the local goblin clan, and she offers to help them stopping, not because of the city but because of the playing with Aurils Domains ... pro's with this that they now have a Cleric that they might be able to 'lure' into their party (which is something that they are lacking) ... though she 'right now' couldn't care less about anything other than winter
Jorkens Posted - 28 Aug 2006 : 17:37:18
Well, Auril would more be punishing the sacrilege; the town should remember to give thanks to her priestess though or you will have a series of follow-up adventures. Level 3 should be fine to let them survive the small groups of goblins and defeating the shaman should get them to about fourth if you want to.
Sian Posted - 28 Aug 2006 : 17:30:12
Jorkens ... nice ideas there ... love the snow strom one, might duel running those two that ... though it is rare to see Auril 'helping' the good :D

btw... they are lvl 3 :p
Jorkens Posted - 28 Aug 2006 : 07:01:38
Some brainstorming.

A member of the guard is found dead and all signs point towards a doppelganger; the gnome was on patrol and gets the job of finding the doppelganger. He needs some help in spying and magical detection. As the doppelganger is a danger to the town as a whole he can commission the help of any citizen, in other words a mage and an information gatherer.

One of the winter storms are especially harsh and the entire town becomes snowed inn their houses. People will have to dig themselves out of their houses. What they don't know is that the storm is the work of the goblin shaman Gal-Bragh and that the goblins are, as we speak working on digging into one building at a time, killing every one inside. The gnome and the thief were both in the same building when the storm started and by gnomish ingenuity, start tunneling under the snow after fighting of a couple of goblins. The first house they arrive in is the mages. Now, how to get out, how to rescue the others snowed in and how to stop the shaman, who each day lets more snow bury the town. They will have to work quickly.

P:S: The arrogant Gal-Bragh has not consulted the priestess of Auril in the mountains north of the city and she is enraged at the manipulations of her Goddess's powers; can they get to her and get her to help.

if you have it I would use the Frostfell book with all the arctic races, monsters and PrCs for the cold...if your players know the Realms than maybe make it a Frostfell campaign and explore the high arctic in the Realms (which really has no canon)
Conlon Posted - 27 Aug 2006 : 22:13:13
If the gnome is a cityguard, perhaps something has happened that requires the City Watch to investigate. Perhaps the abduction of an intended sacrifice victim to a demon prince. Maybe there exists a small group of miners who have begun worshipping an evil entity who demands blood sacrifices in turn for directions to better mining sites? The town guard could be investigating this, but are then distracted by a more immediate, larger threat such as a group of rampaging humanoids, leaving the party to sort this out.
Bladedancer Posted - 27 Aug 2006 : 21:49:37
Maybe a frost giant led humanoid force sweeping the region, the war mage's mentor is really an evil spellcaster looking for a lost artifact who is looking for the party to do all the legwork of obtaining it, or escort duty to a Ten Town's bound trade caravan.

Just for curiosity sake is this town a remnant of the Battlehammer clan that stayed behind when Bruenor took most of the rest of the clan?
