I know what you are thinking . . . this one is set in the Realms. Why conversion notes. Hey, I'm with you. I thought I would get off easy this month having a Forgotten Realms adventure and only have to do two conversion notes, but as it turns out, there are a few things that could use some tweaking to alter the mood a bit.

Its actually not a bad adventure, but if anyone gets wind of any of the "Batman" elements in the adventure, it really does blow this adventure out of the water as far as being able to take it seriously, which is a shame because aspects of it are really good.

Most of these notes are to help shape the adventure more toward the mood that George Krashos' Impiltur article engenered, as well as ever so slightly moving the Batman side jokes a bit more to the margins, where they can be safely ignored.

I am also puzzled as to why monk was chosen as the character class for these two NPCs. It really makes no sense.

It's quite an interesting adventure particularly the way it shows how followers of (I don't know how to do spoilers so I just won't mention the deity's name) would seek to take revenge in a very subtle way. I quite like the choices of races and classes for these principal villains. However, I also would have liked to have seen some stronger ties to George's excellent article.

Aye, I saw the title and after having only picked up this issue of Dungeon two days ago, did think that very thought

Lord Samulbrar Chaseris



While not particularly important, and perhaps not even likely to come up, nothing in Samulbrar's history really explains any monk training, so it might make more sense to replace his levels of monk with levels of fighter.

Danik Grycos



Since Danik Grycos was suppose to have been a young man rescued from Rashemen during Samulbrar's travels, his class levels of monk don't seem quite right, especially not as the character is portrayed (unless you want to give him a class that lets him punch and kick while large words like POW and BAM appear).

The suggestion would then follow to replace Danik Grycos' monk levels with levels of ranger. While he could be reasoned to have been too young to have picked up much from his Rashemi heritage, the ranger abilities dovetail well with both his background and his current situation.

Background Information



One of the things that defines Impiltur is the long history of suffering at the hands of fiends. In the adventure the Naerindyl family is suppose to have fallen into vampireism, and some of the rumors around Samulbrar revolve around the fact that the Lord might have been turned into a vampire by either his new ward or by a hidden member of the Naerindyl clan.

To tie the darkness of the Nearindyl can into the ongoing troubles of Impiltur, the suggestions might be given that the family had several secret cultists of Orcus in their ranks, and that their members eventually made a bargain with the demon prince of the undead to become vampires. Not only might the local populace be afraid that Grycos is a vampire, or a member of the Nearindyl clan has survived, but they might also beleive that ancient texts from the Orcus worshiping clan are still around, and that Samulbrar has fallen prey to this forbidden knowledge and made the pact of the vampire that the Nearindyl did as well.
