Posted - 26 Jun 2006 : 18:46:29 For the life of me I cannot think of a good name for the orog tribe that has served Aluntree Myett (from my minor drow house thread) for the last 200 or so years. I will be posting the current leader of the clan in that thread soon if anyone is interested. But back to the subject at hand. Anyone have any ideas for a good name for the tribe?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Thank Wooly, he's the veritable cornucopia of color variations, I just pointed you in his direction.. Personally I still think they would be better as "The Sublime Host of Well-Manicured Gentlemen" with lots of ruffles, wielding rapiers, and possessing an in-depth knowledge of the current going-ons of Waterdhavian society.. Your players would undoubtably respect your fresh and alternative interpretation of Gray Orcs.. But hey, if you want to go the neanderthal "Ebon Fist" route, that's your choice... |

Posted - 30 Jun 2006 : 21:48:11 Great! that settled it than! I, even as a not-native speaker, would approve of the name EBON FIST. [;p]
Good luck dming, Bladedancer |

What a disturbing image! I'm worried about anyone that even comes up with that one... |

Posted - 30 Jun 2006 : 16:37:21 Eh.... El Magnifico Uno has a good point. The more I thought about it with a name like Sable Fists I kept imagining Orogs in a halter top and a mini skirt. So Ebon Fists it is. Thanks El Magnifico Uno for saving this dm from the ribbing and cat-calls my players would have given me for this one. |

Posted - 30 Jun 2006 : 01:12:08 Look at Wooly the Thesaurus!.. I think one of his alternative colors would work well.. What kind of self-respecting Orog would want itself compared to a furry animal that women and fops wear? Answer - none... So why be the effeminite Sable Fists when you can be the dread.... Ebon Fists!! *cue imposing music*.. Has just that nice tinge of over-the-top fantasy element (which is similar to the "foolish, trying to hard" that Wooly pointed out, but is much much cooler in a B-movie sort of way).. |

Posted - 29 Jun 2006 : 23:34:13 Yup, it's a fancier way of saying "black". Sometimes, using alternate names of colors, or specific shades of them, sounds much better than using just the name of the color. You could say black, or you could say onyx, ebon, sable, jet, etc. Ditto for other colors -- vermilion, crimson, or scarlet work better than red; sapphire, cerulean, or azure work better than blue, and so on. Used sparingly, it can be quite effective. Used too much, it makes it look like you're trying too hard, and thus foolish. |

Posted - 29 Jun 2006 : 22:06:07 It can also be used instead of "black" (mostly in heraldry I think). So basically they're called the Black Fist. |

Posted - 29 Jun 2006 : 20:31:17 I am confused- As not being native speaker the name sounds a little odd to me 'cause I translate Sable as a type of animal known mostly for it's precious fur, rather than its agressiveness or cruelty as Orogs might be related too.
Do I miss something here? |

Posted - 29 Jun 2006 : 18:50:06 I like it, I think it sounds great, though it does remind me a little of a monk order.
I'm glad we could make suggestions that were of absolutely no assistance what-so-ever! |

Posted - 26 Jun 2006 : 21:20:00 Well, Orogs are a bit smarter than the average orc, and a bit more arrogant, so I would think along those lines.
The Supreme Razors, The Sanguine Host, The Heart Takers . . . |

Posted - 26 Jun 2006 : 19:05:10 Well orcs and their offspring tend to be simple, names like
Black Hand , which might in part be that they serve Drow and in part deal death might serve.
Name of founder of the clan, use an orc name generator for ideas.
Jungan , *wink* a made up name.
