A very creative and entertaining aspect of a good game of roleplaying is a good riddle or puzzle. It is a way of challenging the players and giving them time to exercise their brains and not just their dice-arm... This link is created to become a book of riddles and puzzles to challenge the players with... Please share.

Sounds cool... Good way to prove the worth of someone wanting to be granted entrance to some ancient place... Definably usable.

One in which i enjoyed. This version requires the players to be in a Dwarven built location.

Standing on a ledge looking across a deep cravass with strong blowing winds, there are a dozen floating platforms. One each of the platforms are a series of squares with dwarven runes.

TO cross the cravass the players must recognize that the runes are the dwarven calendar, and they must tap out the correct date, according to the dwarves, in 5 rounds or fall to the bottom of the cravass.

If they type the correct date the floating platform will take them to the other side.

This typing of correct date can also be used on:
Doors, portals, chests etc.

But instead of debating the use of puzzles and riddles i had rather hoped that this topic would be a place to collect and share the riddles and puzzles with each other.

That is wright... I am very thorough in my research when dealing with riddles and puzzles. Most often trying them on others than the players before i use them in a session. That way i can kind of measure the level of toughnes of the puzzle.

One possible concern with puzzles, though: you have to make sure the players can solve them. I don't recall the exact puzzle, but I had a DM throw a puzzle at me. She thought that I would easily be able to work it thru, because she'd seen me do other kinds of puzzles before. But this was one of the ones that I do extremely poorly at, so it wound up not being a good experience for anyone.

A classic puzzle, i have entertained my players with is the puzzle of 8 queens. The challenge is to place 8 queens on a chess board in a way so that neither of them can kill each other. It is a hard puzzle, but it is possible and alot of fun. Solved it myself a few years ago when playing eith my cousin... It is recomendable... The solution to the puzzle can be found on various websites... Most of the places with graphic explanations.
