The party in my Zhentarim campaign is approaching 10th level and I need some help for my next adventure plan.

I plan on running the 3.0 Adventure "Into the Dragon's Lair" but doing some heavy modifications to make it compatible with 3.5 stats and making the PC's evil characters who oppose the throne of Cormyr.

So, what I really need help with is a rival party sponsored by the Crown. The Steel Reagent has also caught wind of the Dragon's horde being found and sponsored a group of adventurers loyal to the crown to get their first.

I want to know what Classes/Prestige Classes you people think I should use.

I definitely think I'll be using a Purple Dragon Knight (PGtF) and a War Wizard of Cormyr (MoF) but I need some other ideas. I'm thinking around 5-6 characters is appropriate but I want them to have a Cormyrian feel to them.

As always, thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies.

I will be using the Chauntea idea, I had forgotten about that whole storyline, it's been a while since I've read the Cormyr series. Ranger from the Kingswood will be used as well. I am also planning on using a cleric of Tempus because one of the players has an axiomatic weapon and hasn't gotten much use out of it yet. I figure it fits okay flavor-wise as well because Cormyr was just at war and Azoun himself payed homage to Tempus.

Thanks for the input. I really need to get my hands on that Dragon magazine somehow.

I agree the crown would pretty much sponsor any adventurers but I guess I really didn't explain what I wanted well enough. I'm looking for NPC's that are already servants of the crown and are sent on this quest, not a random band of adventurers who swear fealty. I know it would work but I want the heavy Cormyrian feel.

I think the Crown of Cormyr could sponsor any good-aligned party of skilled adventurers (regardless of class/prc levels) - if they agree to swear fealty to the Dragon Throne. So, IMHO they need not necessarily be Purple Dragon Knights, War Wizards, Tormite clerics etc.

If you can get your hands on Dragon #307 (the May-issue 2003) it has an article by Tom Costa detailing several Cormyr-related prestige classes (the Battlepriest of Cormyr, Council Mage of Cormyr, the Noble Adventurer, the Moon Drover, and the Royal Scout of Cormyr) - and being written by Tom it contains a large enough degree of "fluff" (I really dislike that word for it) that it becomes usable even as inspiration for NPCs not high enough in levels to join one of those classes (shouldn't be a problem if your PCs are high 9's, though).

You could always include a Purple Dragon Highknight as well (Glaraster Rhauligan in Cormyr: A Novel, Elminster's Daughter, some scenes in Death of the Dragon, and one of the short stories in Best of the Realms II is an example of what this type of character is, the stats can be found in the article, After the Dragon, in the Dragon Annual for 2000.

The Crown also sponsors forresters and scouts, so a ranger wouldn't be too far out of the question (or a scout if you have Complete Adventurer). A clerical follower of Owden Foley that is still trying to show the crown the worth of an official temple to Chauntea might be tagging along as well, but clerics of Torm, Tyr, or Helm that might or might not have a few levels of Purple Dragon Knight might be appropriate as well.
