I have a contention with some gaming associates over the shapechange spell, please advise with any sugestions that may assit us.

Shapechange is based upon the Polymorph Other spell with some exceptions which the description goes on to detail. Hoever one piece of errata within the Polymorph Other spell states [Tome&Blood, p93, PolyOther, para 2] "Upon changing, the subject regains lost hit points as if having rested for a full day(... and changing back does not heal the creature further);"

Within the bounds of the Shapechange however it is possible to transform once per round and the above quote is not superceeded/modified. Thus an associate of mine has interpreted that the healing occurs on every change except the last one (the change back to original form).

My contention is that this piece of information cannot be applied to Shapechange, as it is used here within the concept of a spell which only grants one transformation. The detail that should be adhered to is in the original Polymorph Self spell (since this spell granted multiple transformations) [Players Handbook, p237, PolySelf, para 2] that specifies only the initial transformation grants the healing benefit. While the spell description has been superceeded, it was actually the multiple transformations that was rescinded, the application of healing only to the initial transformation hasn't been superceeded, it became an obsolete rule.

Additionally I believe my associates interpretation significantly alters the purview of the spell. Changing a fringe benefit to a major benefit and potentially warping the spell's intent to allow it's abuse as a mage's healing resource, instead of a shapechanging one.

Thanks for any assistance...

Hmmm... I would rule the following:

Bramblestick the druid is wounded by an orcish pursuer and transforms into an owl to fly away. The transformation heals an x-amount of hitpoints. Once in flight, the devious orc shoots an arrow at the owl, wounding the druid even further. Fluttering down into the underbrush, the druid changes shape to a badger and disappears underground. This transformation heals x-amount of damage from the arrow wound, but not from wounds received prior to the owl-shape.

Hope this make sense...

I think that the gain hit points should occur only when the spell ends
