I am currently playing with a group of players who wants to explore the jungle of chult. This however is a region i dont have all that much knowledge about. And as i try to give my players as few limits as possible i will study the subject and make the adventure possible. Can any of you, wise scholars, help me in my search?

Sounds like a good idea... Getting the group trapped between warring nations sounds like fun... Ill try it. Thanks.

Well, you could always have a major (but subtle) serpentfolk war going on. The Sarukh are having some major civil war type issues at the time, and a lot of them center on this area. You could have slayings of poor adventurers who just stumbled upon this way.

Got lots of new ideas for the adventure to Chult. But if any of you have some scattered ideas, please throw them at me.

In "The Ivory Triangle" boxed set there is a description of the city state of Gulg, a jungle/forest city, that would be a perfect outline for a Chult city or village. Also, I've always felt that Dark Suns feral halflings was one of the settings more interesting creatures. They would fit right into Cthulu as well.

Uluu Thalongh (the Chultan legend presented in the 3e FRCS) could be a good counter for Lalali-Puy, the forest spirit of Gulg.

precisely. And because most players dont know much about the place, it gives me plenty of room to bring in some need surprises and different adventures...

True - and I think Chult is neat because of the major Serpent feeling. That's like a whole alien race that's trying to enslave the people down there subtley and openly and few cities fighting back. Neat power struggles down there.

Actually, a little bit of Indiana Jones or Tarzan wouldn't be such a bad thing, so long as you don't let it get away from you. Heck, how many times when you describe a trap in an ancient ruin don't you think about one of the Indiana Jones movies? In a way it kind of helps you to visualize something you aren't likely to have encountered in real life. Call it mental shorthand.

I don't mean to rain on your parade but Chult is quite dull if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming the TSR writers and authors that dreamt up its history and details, it's just that a jungle setting to me is something of a fantasy killer. You have to make a real effort to not slip into Tarzan or Indiana Jones vibes. The PCs are usually the first to run with these.

In particular, you could have one of the barae secretly kidnapped or slain by the yuan-ti, who then put an imposter in that bara's place. Seeing a "bara" speaking or acting against the other barae would certainly hose things in the city... The false bara could be causing unrest, which the rest of the barae are busily trying to stay on top of. Then someone (maybe one of the legit barae) could approach the PCs, saying this other bara doesn't seem to be himself, and could they investigate? Or, for an evil twist, flip it around: the imposter bara approaches the newly-arrived PCs, voicing similar concerns about the other barae, or saying he believes there's an imposter of himself out there in hiding somewhere!

Well, Mezro - the capital of Chult, blessed by Ubtao, could be set upon by many different enemies - for a straight up fight, you could have lizardfolk, commanded by Yuan-ti generals fighting in the name of the Sarukh. For the subtle fight, you could have the Yuan-ti causing civil unrest and beginning to the turn the civilization against itself.

I am planning a two-part adventure... Their first trip to the jungle gives them the impression that it is an abandoned jungle filled with ruins and bloodthirsty monsters. On the second trip they will discover that there is a civilized side of the island... Whether that to be warring nations or something else, i cant decide... Any thoughts or ideas.
Crennen FaerieBane Posted - 22 Dec 2005 : 14:53:34
Well, Chult has an abundance of Volcanic activity, which is probably what make the land so fertile. As you know, it is a heavily contested area between the people of Ubtao, the Yuan-ti of Sseth, and the Wild Dwarves. Uhm, any specifics here?

Very helpful... If you have anything else about Chult that you can tell me i am open for anything
Crennen FaerieBane Posted - 21 Dec 2005 : 14:39:26
Chult was also a major base for the Sarrukh - the reptilian Creator race - which I believe there are still some there, especially now that Sseth is writhing in his little snakey bonds.

This is the map for several areas in Serpent Kingdoms, but unfortunately it only covers about half of Chult, and doesn't include, for example, Mezro.

like all the ideas... Anybody know where to find the 3rd edition map without bying it...
TomCosta Posted - 09 Dec 2005 : 18:27:30
Plus you already have the yuan-ti in heavy residence along the peninsula, and you can turn one of the islands off the north coast into the undead island.
Crennen FaerieBane Posted - 07 Dec 2005 : 00:50:46
That is a good idea. I had been wondering where to put Manifest. My favorite player (Kianna) has been bugging me to run a Ghostwalk game for her. Hmmm, wonder what Kelemvor would be thinking about all of this...

The Sage Posted - 07 Dec 2005 : 00:40:42
That's a great idea Tom!

I'd originally thought about placing the city of Manifest in the Underdark, or perhaps in the Spine of the World, but Chult is just as an intriguing locale.
TomCosta Posted - 06 Dec 2005 : 23:48:22
If you're at all interested, the Ghostwalk setting fits nicely into Chult, placing Manifest atop the mountains where the gates keeping Dendar out of the Realms lies in wait. Change the elves into wild dwarves and have the albino shield dwarves take on the role of the standard dwarves and voila.
Kajehase Posted - 03 Dec 2005 : 23:47:21
You mean like the three volcanoes in the Peaks of Flame marked on the 3rd-edition map?
Kianna Posted - 03 Dec 2005 : 22:48:26
I bet there are volcanoes there too....

I got the impression that Mezro was pretty large, and it's infrastructure is like that of a maze you could get lost in.

Tribal goblins named Batiri, wandering dinosaurs, lost world feel outside of the cites. Outside of the cities, you may not even run into many actual Chultans, but there is a rather nasty guy running around out in the jungles named Ras Nsi that was a champion of Ubtao and defender of Mezro that turned rather dark in his defence of the city and now has an army of undead following him, though he is still loyal to the city, he is an outcast.

i know... My time is short. I dont have time to read the novel before the session. I really need some descriptions of the jungle and its inhabitants. My players have decided to go have a look at it. And i dont want to limit them in their movement so i have to come up with an adventure in the jungle. It is easy enough to make something up, but i would like it to be faithful to original setting... Any help?

*laughs* I just bought a used copy at Amazon.com, although there are certainly other places you could buy it.

There's also the Ring of Winter novel and then Heroes and Villian's Lorebooks for the NPC's from that novel.

I'll vouch for that novel and say it does an excellent job of describing the setting of Chult (and it's not just a copy of Africa and African culture).

It's one of my fave Realms novels, too.
