I hate using the standard system in place for critical hits, and some of my most memorable moments as a player were those times when I rolled a 20, and did something amazing like my wizards sling bullet actually cracked an orc who was running aways kneecap.

I made this post to see what kind of system you all like using for critical hits. If you have a good one, I was hoping maybe I could glance it over and see if it would fit into my game?

Few things I dont like in a critical hit table
**lots of instant death/losing arms, legs, etc. There could be some of this on the table
**one that is likely to confuse the players more than add excitement to the game (oh trust me this is a big one, had one DM whose table took like 3 minutes to figure out and get through each time we rolled a 20)

I am mostly just looking for ideas. One of my favorites was one my last DM used which used a weapons size to determine the severity of the critical hit. I thought this was pretty realistic as a large weapon wielded by a large creature is a lot more likely to deal a crushing blow than a small dagger wielded by a medium sized creature :)

I have a feeling there is already a topic on this somewhere, if so I'll quickly delete this and make it something else, for now I'm hitting reply though

The upcoming Dragon Compendium volume one is going to have a 3.5 update for Dragon Magazine's classic critical hit article.

You could always take a chunk of the critical hit table and make them bleeding wounds - like head wounds, or deep wounds that will continually draw 1 or 2 hit points per round.

I have oft thought about revising the crit table I was using. The old - you lose an arm (or leg, or both! ) isn't as fun anymore. Always has you running around looking for something that will regenerate it - that or switch your deity to Tyr.
