Posted - 09 Feb 2003 : 03:20:20 I'm curious about how other DM's include the concept of Wizard sigils in their campaigns. Do you require them? If so by what level? And how (as players) do you come up with a design? This is one area where my knowledge is very limited. |

Posted - 15 Feb 2003 : 11:49:57 In concurance with Zemd's sagely words I believe that the point of having one was for identity authentication that was enforced by the Gods of Magic.
I have never read anywhere that they were mandatory, although I believe it has been written somewhere (2e) that most mages selected one by third level. Try the Forgotten Realms Campaign box set (2e) for detail...?

My mistake. I have that book too, that is where I must have read it. Anyway, does a sigil have any powers beyond the use of identifying a mage?

Posted - 09 Feb 2003 : 19:33:52 No, it's the first time i post it. And that's not a Sigil, it's the rule when someone try to duplicate a sigil, i found it in the Forgotten Realms Adventures. A sigil is the signature of a wizard. |

Posted - 09 Feb 2003 : 18:37:40 I designed a few sigils for fun, but i don't use them during the game. And do you know The Curse of the Mage Runes? A powerful (level 10+) mage’s sigil is protected by the Trifold Curse of Mystra, a curse which afflicts those (magician or not) who willfully copy the sigil of a known mage in order to deceive. The offender must make three ability checks—one against Strength, one against Intelligence, and one against Charisma. If the Strength check is failed, the offender loses one point of Strength permanently, and 1-4 hit points permanently. If the Intelligence check is failed, the offender loses one point of Intelligence permanently, and is feebleminded (as per the spell, no saving throw). If the Charisma check is failed, the offender loses one point of Charisma permanently, and a glowing apparition (thought to be Azuth in his mortal form) follows the offender around, pointing and shouting, “Falsely done!” This apparition stays with the offender from anywhere from several days to two months, and can cast a real cloud over formal dinner parties (as Zeboaster the Blunt discovered when pulling a prank in the presence of Vangerdahast of Cormyr), not to mention alerting all beings encountered as to the offender’s perfidy. |

Posted - 09 Feb 2003 : 14:47:05 Yes that's exactly what it is. It is a symbol that uniquely identifies the mage. I think there are sections on it in "The Magic of Faerun" and the FRCS. But those sections haven't answered my questions. |

Posted - 09 Feb 2003 : 09:57:07 I think mage sigils are an important part of being a mage. Unfortunately none of the player in my campaign ever got a high enough level to warrant creating a sigil but I usually expect a mage of 10th level to have created a sigil. There really is no guideline or requirement to the design and it really depends on the player as to how the sigil will look. Id also say that the characters alignment should play a part in the design (although this is very sterotypical), in the manner that more of a good aligned or elven mage sigil would be smooth, curved edges etc. but those of a more chaotic alignment would be more jagged and harsh lines..... but thats just my view. |
