Posted - 21 Sep 2005 : 03:19:56 I'm currently trying to figure out a good way to determine how to convert 1.x/2.x population figures for all of the canon towns and cities for the whole planet of Toril to a 3.x value.
SKR posted a thread a few years ago about this (on the WotC webboards, IIRC) indicating the methodology. Has anyone else attempted to figure out what the revised population values would be for the towns/cities/etc. that *haven't* been updated in the 3.x forgotten realms products? Has anyone been successful in doing so? |

FR3's Calimport population was wrong. As for the rest, I see the point of rationalizing regional populations, but since most of the original urban populations were within the tolerance of the revised figures anyway, I'm still not convinced of the point of changing them. |

There is no way I can think of how this can be done. There is no official birth rate, there is no official infant mortality rate, there is no reports of inter racial battles of additional deaths. Not counting the wars, etc. At best there can be a general vision of population increase or decline.
Hmm - I'm not trying to update the population based on time, but to update the "static" population to the 3.x equivalent since 3.x imposed a new "baseline" for the populations (i.e. in 1e, Calimport had a population of ~2,000,000 people. The 2e book Calimport updated that to 212,000 [official census] and 900,000 - 2,000,000 [unofficially]. The 3e FRCS sets the population to 192,795 with a large number of seasonal residents and other transient population.)
How did they come up with the conversion factor such that 212,000 became 192,795? That is the type of information I need to figure out.
Some locales have *never* had a firm population count, but have been merely called a "hamlet," or a "vilage," etc. Calling a locale a "hamlet" in 2e meant a population of anywhere from 50 - 250 persons. In 3x, a "hamlet" is defined as 81 - 400 persons.
In addition, some canon locales in 1e/2e have *not* been addressed in 3.x products. As an example, I count roughly 47 populated locales in Halruaa. Only 8 of them have been updated to 3.x population values. One of them was updated only as a "Small City," even though Shining South should have addressed them properly. |
