I was considering a campaign idea the other day. Thayan (sp) red wizards. Start at level 1 and build yourself up through the ranks of the red wizards.

One would obviously have to pick your players with care and the work from the GM's perspective will be huge, but it could be such an awesome campaign!! Obviously mostly evil and definitly political in nature.

Any thoughts?

Well, good luck with your Thayan campaign.

I ever think that a full evil thayan group would be awesome, even more with the multitude of PrCs available. Letīs see:

a specialist wizard/red wizard
a cleric of Kossuth/elemental archon
a wizard/arcane devotee of kossuth
a cleric/rogue/black flame zealot
a rogue/thayan slaver
a fighter/thayan gladiator

Wow! This is "evil management"

And donīt forget to tell us how your campaign is working.
Drop us a line all the times you have something to brainstorm.

Again, good luck!

Bought Unapproachable East (sp) and Champions of Ruin. Aweseome books, that phylactory split epic spell just increases the Harry Potter-ness

The more I think about it, the more I think it might just be a good idea.

Now to get the right group togethere...

Oh, as far as starting out good, having good or neutral characters trying to survive in such a society, especially if they have a lot of natural magical talent, would be very interesting. Before you think it too improbably, I recently read Shadows of Doom, wherein the Thayan agent in the High Dale was actually one of the nicer "special interest" clandestine characters to show up. Its also been mentioned that the Scardale Enclave, for example, is pretty neutral in its outlook.

Which brings up the point that it might be interesting to have the PCs visit different Enclaves in various cities for whatever reason they might have too. Excuses to travel are always fun.

Of course, we all know that the school of illusion would supremely own at a killer-Quiddich game. That, and maybe transmutation. Shape wood would be a nasty spell in that game.

Why do I suddenly picture a much more violent version of Quiddich between the School of Necromancy and the School of Conjuration? Of course the School of Divination is no fun becuase when the know they are going to loose they never show up . . .

Dreams of the Red Wizards and Spellbound are old edition tomes, as Wooly and Misericordia have said. But they are excelent tomes anyway, no for the rules, but for the historical and political texts in them.
So, go for this tomes. As a DM with a campaign in the Unapprocheable East, Iīm obliged to say that they are very useful books

Dreams of the Red wizards is a 1st edition sourcebook, and Spellbound a 2nd edition boxed set.

EDIT: Wooly burned me on field goal!

Kind of sounds like a twisted Harry Potter to me. Albiet, a cool twisted Harry Potter. Like where Harry Potter kicks the snot out of his rivals for giving him bad looks as soon as he has the power to do so. You can definately get into what made these people evil.

One thing you may do, have the players START neutral or even good, and then have their characters slowly but surely corrupted into evil. Remember, they can start out good, but generally speaking the path towards Red Wizardry either corrupts the hearts of those taking it, or pushes them aside for not converting.

When I do something like this (especially when it comes to a land and organisation that has such history to it), I like to fully research the part... especially if the campaign looks like it'll be running for quite some time. So my suggestion here is based on one of the primary things I do before I start a campaign.

I recommend you learn all you can about the Red Wizards and how they operate in and around Thay. Even if you're already familiar with the lore on Thay... it couldn't hurt to brush up on the fundamentals.

Unlike most area-specific organisations in the Realms, the Red Wizards form a crucial component to the way of life in Thay. They're a highly dynamic force and Thay pretty much rises and falls according to the abilities of the Red Wizards and the ruling Zulkirs. Learning about them helps you to shape and prepare areas of your campaign that can exploit the basic nature of the realm -- which leads to more enjoyable roleplaying.

As such, I would suggest that you revise some of the Red Wizards material contained within such sourcebooks as:- Dreams of the Red Wizards, Spellbound, Unapproachable East, and Lords of Darkness. Re-reading the Red Magic novel is a plus, but I wouldn't say it is NECESSARY.

The advantage to all of this is, you might come across the odd tidbit that you may wish to use to build your adventures.

Precisely... And i actually like playing the low levels best... You are realy in the mercy of all the dangers around you... You need to play creatively and with lots of imagination... The best sessions i have ever played are the low level ones... Makes a better foundation for a future power-character...
Killashandra Posted - 06 Sep 2005 : 12:59:12
Well, I would probably be the one running, but yeah, I'd let all the players start off as young red wizards who've just passed the first level of their training. I love playing from low levels up to high, it makes for such an awesome character growth if you actually play through all the growing up bits.
Faramicos Posted - 06 Sep 2005 : 11:35:05
If going to create such a possible powerful character, you could even take it another step and begin with playing the late childhood of the character and so giving the game another dimension as the past of the character is more than a story on a piece of paper... I have done it succesfully and it gives the game an edge... Plus it is fun to make in depth characters...
