Hi folks!

I am creating an NPC Fighter that I have thought could develop into a Master Samurai (D&D Sword and Fist, page 29) with time. I have also thought that this NPC should have an alignment of LG. However, looking at the code of behaviour of the master samurai, I am not sure that LG is so appropiate. What do you think?

The Master Samurai's Code
- An enemy deserves no mercy.

Please note that this NPC is from the Western Heartlands, has Helm as patron deity, and that I am using this "strange" Prestige Class to create an odd NPC; I meen, I know that the samurai is an oriental class, but, I am taking the liberty to create a Tethyrian human who is so devoted to his lord and so on.

So, this post could in one way be summarised as the following: May a character who thinks that enemies deserves no mercy be of LG alignment?

Maybe, a LN alignment is more appropiate. However, I prefer to go with LG. Please advice.

Best regards,
Webmanus

If I recall correctly the Bushido only explains the code of honor of a samurai, not the definiton of an enemy but Ia am sure that It wouldn't define any non bushido follower as an enemy, for example a peasant who robs to keep his family alive is not a follower of the bushido but is not obviusly an enemy of the samurai, but Iam not completely sure, I should have read Roshomon.

I guess it would dependon the definition of "enemy", as well. After all, samurai are the expressions of a lawful culture, no? Anyone would goes against that lawful culture wouldn't just be a criminal, they'd be an enemy of the culture itself...

Or at least, that's one spin on it.

Judgde with our moral code, absolutely LN. But much depends of education, bg, ethic code in the society where he lives.
I mean, if a char grow up into a slavistic society, he can be LG and consider normal possessing sentient beings, so he can (with the appropriate bg) be LG and deserve no mercy.

Indeed following the teachings of the bushido, and even books as the Art of War of Sun Tzu, where advices to become a good leader and fighter are given, LN would be the correct choice, cause a LG char would have conflicts between his moral code and the bushido one.

Going with the literal interpretation of Bushido, it is more of a LN or LE code.
