I am interested in knowing how your players earn their experience points. Do they earn the most through combat, roleplaying or solving quests? How much do you award compared to the guidelines giving in Dungeon Master's Guide?

I personally tend to award more experience points for intelligent play and good roleplaying that the books suggest to encourage players. I believe one third of the total amount is from combat, another third from quest and story awards and the rest from common and individual awards.

It depends of the character played.
If it's a barbarian, it'll be tough to give him xp just based on role playing (i don't say you can't role play as a barbarian, but...)
Lately, there were a lot of fight in my campaign (based on the last year of the fall of Myth Drannor right now) but i think they had ways to role play.
I'd say 50% xp for role play, 50% xp for combats in average

I like to give lots of roleplay XP...the more creative the roleplay, the more XP I give...I also give XP for individual slain monsters/obstacles and "quest XP" (as in the PC's finally find the lost tome and are awarded XP) which includes personal quests (the sorceress finds her long lost sister). Then, at the end of the session, I also give general "evening XP" in which I give the PCs a final bit of XP which reflects their general work in the campaign during the session.

I'm handing out about 80% of the xp based on role-playing and game contribution. Some special efforts, like detailed backgrounds, journals or other contributing material is also rewarded. Of course combat xp belongs in the awarding process as well, though it tends not to take a prominent role... roughly 20%.

I'm using the guidelines from the DMG as they are: guidelines. The rest is more or less gut-feel.
