Posted - 18 Jul 2005 : 06:57:54 Hello everyone. One problem I'm having some trouble trying to solve is what material would a boyer use to craft a bow? I have the usual yew, ash...bone substances covered, but what would be more exotic materials one could use? I've heard from a friend, who is by far more knowledgable in these matters, that there are woods such as Ironwood or Darkwwod within the Forgotten Realms? Though I read the Forgotten Realms series quite often, I'm still pretty much a novice when dealing with these types of things. Any suggestions? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, thank you Rad . Perhaps we should return to the discussion about bow crafting.

True, but then we still haven't received our Staves of the Irritated Moderators yet ...

The first book of the trilogy, Horselords, is the only one that's set in the Hordelands. Dragonwall is mostly set in Shou Lung, and Crusade is set in Cormyr and on the Golden Way, where the Horde was stopped.
On a related note, I saw an auction for "The Hoard" on eBay this morn. I never heard of that FR product!
Maybe a previosuly un-publicised part of The Year of Rogue Dragons line |

I am a fan of the Hordelands, unfortunately, this is my weakest area in Realmslore knowledge. I do plan on reading the Empires Trilogy as soon as I finish Twilight Giants, so that should help.
Whilst being terrible off-topic already, i'd just have to say that I highly recommend the Empires trilogy! All three books are fantastic. I loved Twilight Giants too. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on these novels when you've read them (over in the appropriate thread, of course..... we have 4 moderators to deal with now ) |

I like the Hordelands. 'Tis one of my favorite areas of the Realms.

But getting back on topic... This is a fantasy setting, with copious amounts of magic. If you can make it plausible and reasonable, you can make a bow out of anything.
How about an arctic ranger, who used a special ritual to fashion ice into a bow?
Or a sea-going type, whose bow is made of shell and kelp?
Or a real nature-lover, whose bow is made of still-living (and possibly leafy!) wood?
Or an efreet, with a brass bow?
Or a critter from the Lower Planes, weilding a bow made from human (or celestial!) bones?

Something else to check for some special materials for weapons/armor is Magic of Faerun, there are at least one type of wood described in there, and several metals. |

Volo's Guide to All Things Magical (available for free download at WotC:- http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads) details several types of wood that might be useful for fashioning a bow.
