Posted - 04 Apr 2005 : 09:24:24 How do you handle maps in your games? Do you let players draw them, as you describe what they see, or do you draw them for players yourself?

Posted - 12 Apr 2005 : 21:09:56 If the group likes to use miniatures or tokens, it works really well to lay out each dungeon room as the party finds it. It is a lot of extra work on the part of the DM, but all you absolutely need is a piece of paper with the proper dimensions drawn on it. Verbal description fills out the other details. My players love miniatures and they really enjoyed this method of mapping. |

Posted - 10 Apr 2005 : 23:43:59 Our DM maps the area. Really cheap lol. We are dots and the enemies are too. XD They were just really cheap maps but hell they worked. |

As a side note, the character who was assigned as the mapper had to have parchment, quill and ink in his inventory and a valid skill to perform the task.
That's an approach that works for me. |

Posted - 10 Apr 2005 : 10:08:12 We always have a Mapper assigned to the adventuring party. The DM will describe the room and give dimensions etc. to allow the mapper to draw it out. Of course, if the map is obscure and hard to describe then the DM will put pen to paper himself. Never is the map pre-drawn and any areas not yet discovered are not given away. I could never understand games which had post maps laid out and with miniatures, you knew where all the rooms were etc. already

Posted - 09 Apr 2005 : 16:15:02 I got tasked with making a map once, as we were playing... It very much wasn't my thing, and slowed down gameplay. The next session, someone else mapped. |

Posted - 09 Apr 2005 : 05:10:15 I remember when the group I used to play in used maps frequently.Whomever was DMing would usually doing the drawing.Sometimes they were prepared maps,or plain old draw as we go.Sometimes when I wasn't the DM.I would insist that a map be drawn.I always that it added flavor.Sometimes they wouldn't want to draw so I would pick up the pencil,and start drawing a map as we went.I would screw it up so that the DM would just take over,and presto.We had a map |

You mean how do I use maps? Well, I don't have a gaming group currently, but I used to let players draw maps themselves. They seemed a bit reluctant though, so I'm wondering if I was doing things correctly. |
