Posted - 04 Mar 2005 : 17:57:55 Ok, I have an evil PCs group (you can get more details in the topic "A new campaign" below) in wich there is a Drow (with a Hat of disguise) and a fey'ri (don't forget its alter self ability).
The campaign is based in Waterdeep, and since last session they didn't have a cleric.
When the monk got a disease, they decided to go to one on the major temple of the city to get a cure. I said to them, hmm... watchout, if you go to Tyr's temple, they will probably ask a few questions and maybe use Detect evil, zone of thrut, etc.. before giving you some help.
Finally they chose to go to Tymora's temple and give a pretty good donation, so I made the decision that no questions were asked by the cleric to do a simple Cure disease.
I'm far more inclined to say that detect evil, and truth telling spells are used in everyday life of cleric, and by member of the watch/guard then my player's who still thinks in 2E way.
Thanks for helping me getting a better idea on this. |

Posted - 07 Mar 2005 : 13:34:17 Ok, Skeptic, how about that?
You are a 15 level fighter, good to everyone and help the villages around the Big City. You seem to have been affected by some curious disease and you are advised by the village elders to go to a grand Temple with a letter from the village council. Why should you tolerate a 4-level priest of a deity you don't even care about, to cast a lie detection or a know alignment spell (remember you are good, you can beat him REALLY badly and he has no reason to doubt you even if you don't show you letter...in addition your illness has been a nuisance for far too long and THIS is a major bad day!!!)???
If all the priests were to scan through every PC indiscreetly, they would end up beaten or worse by the first ill-tempered adventurer, thus losing reputation, power etc.
On the other hand, I do believe that temples are not defenseless... A rogue may not enter with intention to steal or a good character will not enter Bane's temple and have a pleasant healing experience! There are wards against acts that are not according to the deity's will (and the PCs should not be so willing to enter an opposing deity's temple as well). I believe that Tymora's temple is as good as any. According to Faiths&Avatars, Kelemvor's priesthood would have no real objection either, but the experience of being healed by such a Power can be considerably...unnerving. |

Posted - 05 Mar 2005 : 23:36:38 Some temples might ward against Chaous or Evil making it hard to enter the temple. I also see many cure spells being offered to most tht come with the hope of gaining followers. Of course donations help. When talking about raising from the dead, I do suspect that greater care would be taken. This by itself however might not prevent some Good or Lawful from raising, though odds are good that a quest would be an added price to serve a Lawful of Good purpose.
Dieties that have Domains of Good or Law would be the ones I would hesitate to enter if CE, however the Nuetral deities should tend to be vary safe unless the party is known to have harmed members of that religion.
Of course how one persents them to the temple certainly could cause alignment detection to be used, refusal to provide servive or even posible combat. |

Posted - 04 Mar 2005 : 23:40:27 I didn't think that cleric of Tymora will use detect evil/zone of thruth everytime some adventurers come.. but maybe for a raise dead/ressurection ?
But in a Tyr's temple for exemple, for high-level spell? don't tell me they will do a Break Enchantement easily for exemple?
Currently they go to the Oghma's temple and bring some lore they found each time, so things goes well. But if they ask for a powerfull spell, I may have the clerics use some kind of divination.
They have also met a Cleric of Mask and can arrange some meating in different place each time, but he works on his term and dont sell potions ;) |

Posted - 04 Mar 2005 : 23:08:38 I disagree. I think that if a cleric had no reason to cast those spells, they would not do so. Checking the alignment or truth-telling of everyone that comes in the door is going to waste a lot of spells...
Further, just because someone is evil, does that mean they're going to do something against the tenets of whatever faith a cleric is part of? Nope... An assassin, for example, might be in town to slay some Beshaban priests. Would a Tymoran cleric, knowing that, refuse to offer magical healing? Maybe, maybe not...
Tymora is a good deity. She is quite popular among adventurers. But not all adventurers are good... Would she be as strong if her clerics refused healing to neutral or evil adventurers?
I can see priests asking questions. But magically checking out the responses is going overboard, I think. |
