Posted - 27 Feb 2005 : 14:07:52 Hello and well met! (Please excuse my "clumsy" english and the long post! )
This is my first post on these forums. I'd like to ask if anyone has experience with old FR modules running with the recent Ed. of D&D (3.5) and if there are (fanmade) conversions for these.
After four years without gaming, me and my old gaming group have decided to play again regularly. I was the DM of a 2nd Ed FR Campaign that lasted nearly 3 years. Also, I am the only one with the 3.5 rules so we have to learn the rules step by step while playing (all group members are experienced role-players, so this won't pose much of a problem).
Ok, here is the deal: I recently downloaded the FR adventure "Under Illefarn" and I really like it (has some kind of old school feeling about it!)
Has anyone on these boards played this module under 3.5? What changes did you make? I decided to use nearly all encounters/fights like they are given in the original module. Sadly, I don't have any experience with combat and monster difficulty in 3.5!
I opened our first gaming session with a selfmade mini-adventure : A black bear killed cattle in a hamlet around Daggerford and started to harrass the farmers. The PCs, being memebers of the local militia, where sent to investigate and discovered (after killing it), that the bear was wounded (left Paw, so it had only 1 bite and 1 claw attack) by an Orc arrow. Further Investigation led them to a Burrow in the Misty Forest, where the made short work of 5 Orc Bandits (and a 1,50m centipede in a crate).
All Charakters rolled really good stats and the group consists of:
- a human fighter - a human rogue - a half-(wood)elf ranger - a human cleric of Tempus
So far they have handled the Combat well, although 2 PCs have been seriously wounded (no one was in danger of dying, though)
I then started the "official" campaign "Under Illefarn" which led the PCs into the Lizard Marsh (hot on the trail of a raging baron and some Lizardfolk) where they were promptly attacked by a monitor lizard (rolled a 1>>Random Encounter ). They killed it without getting hurt. (Here we had to break off...)
But the next set fight will be against 6 Lizardmen...I toned some of them down (8 hp, no shields) but also gave their leader a Scythe as his weapon...Is this too much to handle for them?
Has anyone played Under Illefarn and can share his experience with me?
And I am desperatly looking for the 3.5 stats of a Giant Frog or a Giant Toad (especially the Tongue Grapple/Swallow abilities)!!
Thanks alot!

I have tried to play Under Illefarn for the start of a dwarven campaign. I just found equivalents or outright changes for the monsters. The focus was quite different for my group. UI was the first adventure and the inhabitants were meant to be way to powerful for them. (they used an old teleport/portal from the Rift to there). They were escorting a high old one on a search for and old group from the clan that were lost. So their focus was to find their way out of the complex without bringing down the horde of denizens upon them. They got stupid in the end and fired into their main encampment then ran and got themselves cornered. I ended up saving their bacon with a dwarven contingent that had assembled in Daggerford to try and re-occupy the dwarven complex of old.
Keep the main thrust of the lore and change the plots to fit what you want out of the module.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have... A lot of us have been Realms fans for years, and we know a thing or three about the setting. Plus, we've got some of the authors and creators here!
As for the rest of us, we are friendly, mostly harmless, and occasionally strange... Enjoy your stay!
Now me, I've not DM'ed or even had a chance to play under 3.x rules. So I can't help too much with rules questions... But I don't see any reason why 1st or 2nd edition stuff can't be played under 3.x. In most cases, the lore and setting remains the same. |
