Capn Charlie asked Ed Greenwood for some holidays in the Questions for Ed Greenwood thread in Novels, and Ed assures me that the moment he's through with Jerryd's islands request, he'll be sending me holiday lore. So look there soon!

LOL, I'm using the same with my team, only adding: "...but one, and that is the question not being aksed."

Thanks for these simple yet obvious ideas, it at least started some creative thought processes for me. e.g...For the Western Heartlands (Fields of the Dead and south of there) roughly somewhere in Kythorn I could imagine a celebration of the successful campaign of Azoun I to push the Shoon back and give the Western Heartlands back to its people. Dates could vary from place to place, with the earliest occurences in the eastern regions, closest to the Sunset Mountains and the later ones, maybe even into the Flamerule or Eleasis further to the south, stopping just short of present day Amn. Basically following the path Azoun's crusade would have taken.

I know it was a stupid question anyway but I still had to ask. Lol. However, I suspect that some would still celebrate it just out of spite and to piss off the Banites.

My guess? They'll not wipe it off their calendars, but they can't obviously celebrate it as Bane's death. Why not use it as a holiday of hope, commemmorating a day when supposed monolithic evil was defeated for a goodly time? Just as Christmas tree lights and Yule logs were to signify the lights against the darkest time of the year and the promise that it would return.

It could be celebrated with mock battles and "Bane" is defeated and his avatar slain, but now with a warning that the vigilant must always watch against evil's return.

What if it's one of the few holidays that people start to venerate Ao and his overgodship? Those cultists of Ao might want to use the death of the three as a way to promote their cult/religion and others might just look at that as hope (of a god who'll always work to keep evil and good in balance (or evil in check, depending on what helps you sleep at night)).

Other options for holidays include

veneration days for holy figures of the Church (whichever one you want--I introduced Rhyester and various dates associated with him for Lathander's church);

birthday or coronation anniversaries for the rulers of cities/countries (Piergeiron's birthday just might have the Taverners' Guild dispensing complimentary drink in the streets outside the Palace so all assembled might raise a glass to the Open Lord at sunrise on his birthday);

Founding days (when a city or country or major building is built/established);

and last but not least, battle commemorations (i.e. every village and hamlet across the Realms has had its share of bad times and there's likely local celebrations of whatever great victory they had over monsters or marauders or whatnot--case in point are celebrating the Troll Wars in Waterdeep, etc.).

Mayhaps we'll start collaborating herein on putting some of these things on a calendar and filling in any gaps so there's at least one event/holiday every day across the Realms, hm?

I wouldn't say it was a stupid question... It was a reasonable one to ask, since it's not been addressed in the sourcebooks or novels.

There's a question I've been wondering about for awhile concerning holidays. In Faiths & Pantheons, it was said that the destruction of Bane was celebrated by over 27 different nations on Faerun. However, since the Lord of Strife has been resurrected, do some nations still celebrate this?

Well, it'd be kinda silly to celebrate it now, wouldn't it?

I know not of a canon answer, but I'm sure that either the celebration got changed to something else, or they quietly stopped celebrating. I'd think the former more readily than the latter -- most people aren't willing to give up a holiday.

I shall be e-mailing it to you within moments, Big Al.

But I shall post a disclaimer, first. I did not create the file, nor do I even know where I found the information. Further, I've not gone over it to make sure it's accurate. And it's just holy days, not anything else.

Still, I'm sure some would find it useful.

I do have such a file, one I collected from somewhere on-line. I know not where I found it; I've had the file for almost a year... But it appears to list all of the deity-specific holy days of the Realms.

I'd post it here, but it's about 7 pages long. Give me your e-mail address, and I'll be happy to e-mail it to you.
