When setting games for your Adventurers which type of setting do you prefer to set it in?

Do you prefer forests or wildernesses or cities or tombs or caves?

I much prefer cities and civilised areas but I wondered what you all thought.

It depends on the level of the characters.

L1-5 Urban adventures (taverns, city watch, caravan guards)
L6-10 Rural adventures (crypts, towers, dungeons, etc)
F11-15 Wilderness adventures (deserts, mountains, underdark)
L16-20 Planar adventures

ROTFLOL... some of the Silver Marches players will not be too pleased to learn that your post above has given me some ideas. Thanks Captain

Though winter is drawing to an end in the campaign, there's still snow falling and winter wolves are always on the prowl in the High Forest...

I like to mix things up, mostly, but I still put the PCs more into the wild. I love to have the PCs marching through places like the Spine of the World, with the wind whipping at their backs and winter wolves attacking their flanks. One thing that can make things exciting out in the mountains is to add an unknown, old town or other settlement. One of the best games I DMed was in the Spine of the World, and the PCs came upon the monestary of the Monks of the Frozen Rose, a monestary of monks devoted to Auril. It was amazing having to fight the evil monks, run before they could call upon all the monks in the monestary, and get back to town before the monks could cause an avalanche to bury the town. It was amazing.

I prefer huge cities as well. Lots of opportunities. These I combine with areas with lots of mountains and forests.

For table-top games I prefer either dungeons or wilderness settings. For me this is more of a manageability point of view. I find that at a table-top game I cannot give the amount of attention to the NPC's in an urban environment that they should receive. Dungeons and wilderness areas have less NPC's aand are therefore somewhat easier to manage.

In my PbeM games I have one game currently set in an urban area (Berdusk) and another in a wilderness area (Olostin's Hold - High Forest). Because of the nature of a PbeM I find that I can give more attention to NPC's using them to their fullest capability. However I still have a weak spot for nature and like to set encounters in the outdoors, using also the environment as a challenge.

I love creating and useing huge metropolises that overwelm my players

I find fighting and questing through a city is so much more interesting with all the cults, temples, murders and guards.

Another thing I like doing is putting my players incharge or establisments such as shops, pubs etc because it adds another dimension to the game, managing the business as well as going out adventuring.

I prefer wilderness, particulary forested areas. My campaign is mainly around the Daggerdale area and covers Cormanthyr and Cormyr. Somehow i have to get the players over towards the North and Silver Marches though

When venturing into "dungeon-crawls", its mainly caverns rather than dungeons.

I usually only use small towns and villages as civilised areas, I dont want to overwhelm the players too much by plunging them into a sprawling metropolis, I want to keep away that "ahhh, im safe within the city walls" feeling. Let them feel that an orc attack could decend upon the village at any moment just as theyre having a relaxing ale or buying a new length of rope
