Posted - 29 Oct 2024 : 17:34:42 In continuing my Rolemaster FR conversion, I decided to do a scroll on Faerunian Swordsmanship. This scroll will cover four basic styles for Fighters, Paladins, Rangers, Rogues, and possibly thieves. While in 3.x D&D you basically build your own style of Swordsmanship using feats as you level, Rolemaster handles this differently with skills. This scroll uses the Martial Arts Companion, and as said before, this book can only be bought second hand.
This scroll covers: Basic Faerunian Swordsmanship, Two Weapon Swordsmanship, and Sword and Shield. In the Martial Arts Companion, two more styles of European swordsmanship is covered -- Classic Fencing and Italian Fencing.
Faerunian Basic Swordsmanship (Sword) Basic Weapon Style [25 style points] Description -- Since the advent of the Bronze Age in Faerun, the sword and swordsmanship as come in hand in hand. This style of swordsmanship is taught in all lands of Faerun where swords are forged. The sword is an important weapon in Faerun, and swordsmen are taught from an young age by a master. This style originated in Chondath and Mulhorand, but has since spread to all the realms. This style would be known by most adventurers who use the sword as a defensive and offensive weapon. Recommended Skills--Broadsword weapon skill, Alertness, Adrenal Defense Weapon Style Abilities[Core]--Broadsword melee attack [5 points], +1 to Initiative Rolls [5 points], -1 to Fumble Range [5 points], Lesser Adrenal Defense [10 points]
Faerunian Two Weapon Swordsmanship [Sword] Advanced Weapon Style [55 style points] Description--There are two styles of Two Weapon Swordsmanship, one developed on the surface of Faerun by the elves, and one developed by the drow. While the two styles share a common origin, by the end of the Crown Wars, the two styles diverged and were developed independently. However, mechanically they are the same. This style is adaptable for most one handed swords -- whether they are broadswords, longswords, or scimitars. Since the Retreat of the Elves to Evermeet, the style is kept alive by certain human sword masters. It's taught to anyone who is willing to learn. There is one drawback to this style, the one who learns and uses it can not use a shield. The two weapon stylist depends on his armor or agility for protection. Recommended Skills--One handed Sword Skills, Two Weapon Fighting, Alertness, Adrenal Defense Weapon Style Abilities [Core]-- Related weapons (swords) attack [10 points], -1 to Fumble Range [5 points], +10 bonus to Two weapon Fighting [10 points], Greater Adrenal Defense [30 points]
Sword and Shield (Sword) Advanced Weapon Style [45 style points] Description--This style was developed by two peoples independently. The shield dwarves of Faerun, and the Northmen of the Moonshae isles. As you will discover, both styles are mechanically the same. The style is about using one's shield in combat. Although developed to help the martial artist (in this case, a fighter) use his shield more effectively in combat, it does have it's limitations. While the two weapon stylist using the style above relies on his agility for avoiding attacks; the sword and shield stylist relies more on his shield. The training of the style also begins at a young age. This style is taught in Calimshan, the Northern Marches, Amn, and Tethyr, due to having trade routes with the Moonshae Isles and the dwarves. Recommended Skills--Longsword weapon skill, Feinting (armed), Disarm (armed), Adrenal Toughness Weapon Style Abilities [Core]--Longsword attack [5 points], +10 Bonus to Feinting (armed) [10 points], +5 bonus to Adrenal Toughness [10 style points], Shield Training [20 points] |

Posted - 29 Oct 2024 : 23:14:30 Faerunian Swordsmanship, part 2 This part of the scroll on Swordsmanship is part 2. This part of the scroll includes about three different swordsmanship styles. These three swordsmanship styles are not as wide spread. They include: Hack and Slash, Stage Swordsmanship, and Knightly Swordsmanship.
Hack and Slash (1 handed edged weapons) Advanced Weapon Style [50 style points] Description--The hack and slash weapon style is about overpowering your opponent with strength. The user makes powerful blows against his opponent with his one handed weapon. This is in attempt to overpower the opponent and either make him back down or cut him up into pieces. Similar how the knights use their two-handed (great) swords against each other on Horseback, the Hack and Slash style first appeared among the Orcs during the Orcgate Wars. Eventually, others learned how to use the style. It soon spread, but not as much as the Basic Swordsmanship style above. The style is used with a shield, but the shield is used to make blocking maneuvers, and is not used with the style as part of it's training. The Hack and Slash style has made it as far west as the Moonshaes, and even as far east as Agralond. Recommended Skills: -- One handed edged skills, Adrenal Toughness, Feinting (Armed), Body Development Weapon Style Abilities [Core]--1 Handed Edged Weapons Category [20 points], -1 to fumble range [5 points], +10 bonus to Armed Feinting [5 points], Weapon Breaker [10 points], Shield defensive ward [10 points]
Stage Swordsmanship (Sword) Basic Weapon Style [30 style points] Description--Stage swordsmanship is used by bards in their plays. Although it resembles Basic Swordsmanship in form, in practice its more fluid. Stage swordsmanship is about parrying your opponent's attacks. It also can be scripted and as such try to downplay any actual wounding. This style of swordsmanship can be found in the Heartlands of Faerun. Although not actually designed to be used in battle, it does have some applications. Recommended Skills--Broadsword Weapon skill, Adrenal Defense Weapon Style Abilities [Core]--Broadsword weapon melee attack [5 points], +2 to initiative [10 points], All-Around Defense [15 points]
Two-Handed Swordsmanship (Sword) Basic Weapon Style [25 style points] Description--This style is used by knights, on horseback, in order to batter other knights, or just cut right into them. The two-handed (great) sword is used. Along with the warhorse. Usually the warhorse provides the momentum, and the knight uses his strength as leverage to bring the sword down on his opponent. This style is seen in Cormyr, Sembia, and even the Western Heartlands. Any place where knights are fielded in battle. This style is an effective armored killer when used correctly. It resembles Hack and Slash, as it requires strength to be used effectively. Recommended Skills -- Two-handed Sword weapon skill, Adrenal Toughness Weapon Style Abilties [Core]--Two Handed sword melee attack [5 points], -1 to fumble range [5 points], +1/-1 to the critical roll [15 points] |
