Note: if you want a shape with wings, Avariel is a good choice (they are elves, and consequently humanoids).
Note 2: the above list assumes the Alter Self spell is cast by a humanoid creature. If the caster is an Outsider (i.e. Planetouched, like Aasimars and Genasi), then you have to choose outsider shapes not exceeding 5 HD, as per the spell. Those are:
- Lantern Archon
- Small Arrowhawk
- Azer
- Dretch
- Quasit
- Imp
- Lemure
- Formian Worker
- Formian Warrior
- Hell Hound
- Mephit (all types)
- Planetouched (all)
- Rast
- Ravid
- Flamebrother Salamander
- Shadow Mastiff
- Juvenile Tojanida
- Triton
- Vargouille
- Xill
- Minor Xorn
- Yeth Hound
As you can see, there is added benefits to play one of those "unfairly +1 ECL" Planetouched races!  The Alter Self list for Outsiders is nothing but magnificent!
