Ok, I am the Dm of a rather high-level (14th level all Pcs) group, consisting of a Barbarian/frenzied Berserker, Fighter/Sorceror/Spellblade, Rogue/Wizard/Spellblade, Bard/Virtuso and a Druid.
They are about to enter a temple of Shar, encountering (not as a single encounter, but spread throughout the rather small complex) about 8-10 Monks (dark Moon variety) of 9-11th lvl, about 10-15 medium lvl. clerics (5-9th level), and a high priestess of 16th level.
My questions:
1. Never having played monks before, what tactics should they use, keeping in mind that my group is VERY powerful and can really use a nice challenge. What moves, perhaps in concert with other monks, couls prove devastating? Any idea and help is appreciated
2. Always had a problem in running clerics the proper way. So please provide me with the spells they should use, and in what order. Keep in mind, that the first few encounters will be with the monks, so that the priests are forewarned of the Pcs approaching and have time to cast a "power-up"-suite. As to the exact spells they should use, I ask you...
3. The final fight between the high priestess and some of her minions and monks will take place in a chamber of modified deeper darkness, which grants folowers of Shar the blindsight quality. Can I do that? Otherwise I´ll have to equip the enemies with blindsight potions. That´d be no problem, right? What are the best high-level spells for the priestess, keeping in mind that she and her minions are part of a combat-oriented sub-cult of Shar, fanatically intending to wipe out all Selúnites in the North.
I want this fight to be hard. Real hard, because the PCs are only the first wave of a counterattack of Selúnes Clergy, after a small, mislead group within the Shar followers had an all-out attack on the local temple. After about 30 minutes past the PCs entering the Shar-temple, a whole squad of Selúnites will follow, carrying sufficient duct tape (and healing/curing spells, too)
Any ideas of my fellow scribes are welcome,
thanks very much in advance,
Alex

Posted - 06 Apr 2004 : 08:52:00 Oh, nice use there. I never considered the slow fall ability in light of ambushes. Obviously, of course, the monk's fast speed would be in their favor as well, allowing them to hide farther away than the party might expect.
Now, would you be treating the monks as individuals? Or would they all have the same feats? Regardless, I ought to take a look at some monk-related information I have buried around here. There might be a few things there. At the very least I should look at some feats. |

Posted - 05 Apr 2004 : 21:07:31 A strategy I use with monks sometimes is to take advantage of their Slow Fall ability to ambush the party. Have them hiding in the stonework near the roof, and they can drop in on the party.
As for the chamber with Deeper Darkness, a potion may not be necessary, maybe the members of this temple have rings that grant the Blindsight ability. To avoid PCs acquiring one of these baubles, have the rings attuned to a certain person. For extra evil kicks, don't voluntarily give up the information about it only working for a single person, even if the party's spellcasters ID it
Edit: What I meant by "Voluntarily" is that if it were enchanted in the way as to offer the blindsight quality, it would obviously be created using magic of the Shadow Weave. The spellcasters would probably have to test it to find all the little nuances. |
