The main effect listed is quote: This spell prevents natural smoke from rising into the air. The smoke instead rolls out from the fire and dissipates into the ground 6 inches from its source.
Thus it appears to be a spell intended to prevent any one from seeing smoke from a fire. The 6 inches however might also conceal the light of the fire so that one can see neither.

It is 0 or 1st level spell according to source.

Posted - 05 Jan 2017 : 15:32:35 Normally, adventurers stopping to build a campfire are doing so at night. So the visibility of the column of smoke isn't really a factor... However, if the smoke is rolling along the ground, I'd say that would make it more noticeable to anything that relied on scent, rather than less noticeable, and would thus increase the odds of a random encounter.
From the information you've provided, I'd say that the only practical effects of the spell would be to increase concealment in the immediate error (and not by a lot, unless it was a very smoky fire), and during daylight hours, prevent any distant parties from seeing a column of smoke in the air. |
