In my version I'm working on many things at the moment and one of those is the return of Moander. In my opinion a god like Moander should never be able to truly die and the Faiths and Avatars book from 2nd edition even hints at this.

At the moment I have created a green hag who is a Chosen of Moander. The rotting god hid some of it's power inside the hag because it saw it's own defeat. The hag currently resides in The Darkwatch and has several deepspawn down in the rift and are breeding trolls, along with her army of shambling mounds and undead. I have dubbed her the Troll Queen. The plan is to have her army cut a path of destruction across the Dales to Yulash where she will enter the ruin of the ancient temple to Moander and resurrect the god.

Just looking for a little critique. Was actually planning to write this as an adventure.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions lads!

Just a little update. I've decided that "the Creeping Darkness" is the one who's gotten things moving by infusing the hag with a bit of Moander's divinity and granting her spells. I decided to make her a druid/cleric. The "creeping darkness" wants desperately to be merged back with Moander.

The hag will eventually help the darkness escape and the two will march to Yulash. The hag will be sending agents to implant what I dub "the seeds of Moander" into unsuspecting victims all around the Dales. The hag has been doing some rituals and divinations and found out that a relative of one of the elven high mages that originally sealed Moander is living in the Dales.

The plan is to infect the elf and use it's body as a host for the "creeping darkness".

Moander is one of those entities that deserves better.

I'll skip my own shilling and instead throwing ideas out.

A mountain of rot as a living dungeon if you want something old school.

I would make it a bit "invasions of the body snatchers, where you have to decide whose been seeded (literally).

What evil plants do you want as "natural avatars" such as darkwood.

I would give him a particular axe to grind against the elves, as they originally sealed him in. corrupt an elf as his avatar.

(I'm seeing almost a "treehouse of horror" as a location as well as an elf settlement goes through the corruption)

Of course Saurials are also prominent in his story, and will leave it at that.

Also lay down a riddle that explains how he corrupts it.

I really like the idea of a green hag been the key mover and shaker of his corruption and should have spies.

From Pathfinder, a Blight Druid, Witch or Black-Blooded Oracle seem like good classes for the hag.

Well the way I see it with regards to Lolth, how is she supposed to persuade anyone to stop someone who is trying to resurrect Moander and obviously has the god's favour behind them? Lolth would never turn to "her" followers and tell them that she is posing as another god.

Do you really think Lolth would try to persuade anyone, or tell them the truth about something like that?

No, she'd paint your hag as some sort of threat, and let her followers fall all over themselves trying to take care of it. She could let her elven worshippers know this hag planned on despoiling or destroying the woods, she could tell some local drow that this hag had some item of great power...

Heck, she could even have a follower hire adventurers to deal with this hag who threatens to once more unleash Moander! Your average good-aligned adventurer would not know Lolth was Moander, and they'd be eager to stop his return. As long as they don't have a reason to question whoever tells them that, they're not going to know who truly hired them or why.

I think Lolth would take particular delight in having the good guys thwart someone who threatened her power... Especially given that the alternative would be to allow an evil power to return.

Finder's clergy exceptionaly rare but I guess I could have some find out about what's going on.

Finder would likely be keeping kind of an eye out for anything associated with Moander, I would expect. And his followers, too, would want to interfere with Moander's return, either directly or indirectly. The latter would likely also involve aiming adventurers at the threat and hoping for the best.

The only part I could see making sense would be a follower of Lolth tricking a group of adventurers into destroying the hag before her plans could be executed.

I would say that by leaving out Lolth and Finder trying to interfere, you're removing potential for conflict and thus for roleplaying... But that's your call.

I'm a little curious... Why start from the Darkwatch, where there is a piece of Moander, and then go to Yûlash, where Moander was but is no longer?

Also... How is Lolth going to react to this? Since Moander's demise, she's been pretending to be him and answering prayers in his name. Not only does this give her more power, it also gives her an in among the surface elves -- some of them would never consider praying to Lolth, but Moander, as a "nature" deity, is more acceptable.

Finder Wyvernspur also needs to be factored in, since his divinity was once Moander's.

Well in my Realms there is an artifact of Moander that resides in the old temple under Yulash. By combining the power of Moander and the artifact, the god will be able to rise again.

I think Lolth has enough going for her so if Moander returns she will just have to live with it and share the wealth. Finder never became a god of rot and corruption in my version that part of the portfolio was never fully gained by anyone. Moander is a deity that is ancient by even gods standards. It transcends beyond a portfolio. As long as rot and corruption still exist and there are individuals willing to worship it then the god of rot lives in one shape or form.

I had the same idea for a campaign, playing 3.5 edition and I placed the last temple of Moander in the Flooded Forest, where there is the mysterious Mage's Tower. I thought of the owner of the Mage's Tower being an Hex Dragon from Dragon #343.

From their description in the magazine : "They love corruption, betrayal and decay [...] and they enslave people to build bigger and bigger lairs as they grow in power and age.

It'd be interesting an Adult Hex Dragon with some class levels, my original idea was a simple wyrm Hex Dragon.

He resides there, kidnapping and luring all nearby wizards to find a way to open the doors of the sealed temple where the spark of Moander is trapped...aiming to take it as its own.

(In my campaign I had the party find out evidence that the stolen Vault of Ages of Myth Drannor had be hidden there, the theft made by the drow allied with the fanatic Houses of Myth Drannor, Drow stole the vault thanks to the guards help, the Elves hid the loot in the temple of Moander,a place where noone from Myth Drannor would return after the battle, they killed the drow there to hide any evidence...and because...who would care of few drow dead anyway?)

Might be interesting if your trolls were blightspawned. You would have to modify the mechanics some to fit 5e rules more closely (it wouldn't be ability score drain, but probably several saves). But the idea of them turning from trolls into regenerating plant trolls that infect other people and turn THEM into plants... I'm thinking that would fit Moander quite well.

Below just for reference is the 3.0 blightspawned template from Unapproachable East.
“Blightspawned” is a template that can be added to any animal, beast, or plant (referred to hereafter as the “base creature”). The creature’s type changes to “plant,” if it is not already a plant. It uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Special Attacks: A blightspawned creature retains all the special attacks of the base creature, and also gains those special attacks listed below.
Blight Touch (Su): Supernatural disease—any natural attack, Fortitude save (DC 10 + 1/2 blightspawned’s HD + blightspawned’s Constitution modifier), incubation period 1d6 days; damage 1d4 temporary Constitution and 1d4 temporary Charisma. Unlike normal diseases, the effects of blight touch continue until the victim reaches Constitution
0 (and dies), Charisma 0 (becoming a blightspawned creature, if the victim qualifies; see Create Spawn, below), or receives a remove disease spell or similar magic (see Disease in Chapter 3: Running the Game in the DUNGEON MASTER’s Guide).
Create Spawn (Su): An animal or plant infected by a blightspawned’s blight touch becomes a blightspawned itself if its Charisma reaches 0 before its Constitution does. When a creature infected by blight touch becomes a blightspawned, it recovers all ability score points lost to the progress of the disease.

Special Qualities: A blightspawned retains all the base creature’s special qualities, and also gains those special qualities listed below.
Plant Traits (Ex): A blightspawned is immune to poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, and polymorphing. It is not subject to critical hits or mind-affecting effects. A blightspawned creature also has low-light vision.

Undead Transformation (Su): Each month a creature lives as a blightspawned, it must succeed at a Fortitude save (DC 15 + 1 per previous saving throw attempted) or die. A
blightspawned that dies in this fashion animates as a juju zombie, described later in this chapter.
Abilities: Adjust from the base creature as follows: Str +4, Con +2, Wis –2, Cha –2.
Climate/Terrain: Any land.
Organization: Gang (2–5).
Challenge Rating: Same as the base creature +1.
Treasure: None.
Alignment: Always neutral evil.

I would suggest changing the destination of this crusade to Moander's road where lies the remains of his last avatar. That might be better place to ressurect him.
