Hello, fellow scribes.
The 5th edition DMG states that "the Feywild exists in parallel to the Material Plane, an alternate dimension that occupies the same cosmological space. The landscape of the Feywild mirrors the natural world but turns its features into spetacular forms" (page 49).
The same book also states (page 68): "Where stray energies from the Far Realm leak onto another plane, matter is warped into alien shapes that defy understandable geometry and biology."
So, I'm wondering: a Far Realm leak into the Material Plane could affect the Feywild? If so, what could be the bizarre results? |

My own personal take on the planes and their relationship to Faerūn is simply, canon be damned unless it's absolutely relevant to your tale.
For example, the Feywild in my mind is simply the 'faerie' subgenre of fantasy fiction that may or may not have a place in your story. I see no reason why it has to be a distinct dimension of reality in it's own right or why it has to mirror the material world unless that aspect lends itself to an interesting scenario. The lost woods of the Legend of Zelda are an excellent example of the 'faerie' subgenre, otherworldly and beguiling but not necessarily existing as a seperate plane of existence.
I would suggest that the wording of the Far Realm is deliberately ambiguous for similar reasons. It makes narrative sense that this bizarre plane could bleed into the material world, potentially creating a Feywild region but equally there's logic to the notion that the organic energies of such a place would repel anything so unnatural as the Far Realm.
This is all Amazing Tales stuff, exactly what inspired the hobby in the first place. What sounds cool to you? |

Actually, the Plane of Faerie, which was proto-Feywild, existed at least since early 2E, and the Far Realm existed since mid to late 2E, being mentioned first in The Gates of Firestorm Peak(published in 1996).
I guess possibly the place from the Black Gem was mined in Faerie/Feywild, might be point were Feywild/Faerie, crossed over with the Far Realm.
Seeing how Underdark has some connection with the Far Realm, the Feydark may have some overlap with the Far Realm. |

... the Demiplane of Sildeyuir was retconned/revealed as part of the Feywild, the Nilshai were retconned/revealed as coming from the Far Realm, so the corruption of Sildeyuir we can observe in The Farthest Reach (Book 2 of the "Last Mythal" serie) may be what you're looking for as "interaction" between Far Realm and Feywild.

I used to have the same feeling about de Far Realm could only touch de Prime, but the statement in the DMG doesn't rule out the other planes. But I find the idea that only the Prime can be affected by the Far Realm a very interesting one.
I like your idea that the Feywild have a repelling effect on the Far Realm, Wooly. But I wasn't thinking about a Far Realm leaking directly into the Feywild, but a leak into the Prime that indirectly affected the Feywild. Since the Feywild sort of "mirrors" the Prime, I thought that a strong affected Prime by the Far Realm could indirectly have some influence in the Feywild.
But if the Feywild could reppel Far Realm leaks, probably it wouldn't be indirectly affected as well. |

I, personally, have always regards the Far Realm as only being able to touch the Prime.
I don't know of anything that says it's not possible for the Far Realm to touch other planes, though... My only proof is that I don't know of any such occurrences, but there are references to it touching the Prime.
Now, if I had to, I'd say that the vibrant energies of Faerie/the Feywild have a repelling effect on the Far Realm, and keep it out...
But this is all my personal opinion, shaded in no small part by a love of Faerie and a dislike of the entire idea of the Far Realm. I don't want Cthulhu in my D&D, and I think there's enough evil and strangeness in the Great Wheel that we don't need the rough bolt-on of another genre, especially one that fails to interest me. (I've read most of the Cthulhu stuff and simply don't see the appeal. On a related note, I'm not into the horror genre, either.) |
