I used to have the boxed set of the Ruins of Myth Drannor but it is now lost among a pile of stuff in our attic. I managed to get my hands on a .pdf version which has proven to be a useful substitute bar the absence of the set's monstrous compendium pages.

Does anyone know where I could get some .pdf files of these creatures? I've managed to track down a few on online monstrous manuals but there a couple of key monsters that are only given scant mention here, namely the killer beetle (or arathra), and the doomsphere beholder. It's a real shame because the best thing about many of the 2nd edition realms sets were the monstrous compendium pages and I'd love to recover the original set in some form.

I ran into the same problem, I remember downloading a pdf version of just the monstrous compendium pages, but I havnt a clue where I downloaded them from, so let me see if I can find that file and I'll email it to you.

Just give said dragon some wizard levels and not just the spells for the amount of HD they have and look out!

My scales are like tenfold shields! My teeth are swords! My claws, spears! My tail a thunder bolt! My wings a hurricane! My breath and magic, DEATH!

Well, during the Arcane Age they also get access to higher level spells. But really, I'm more wondering if Ed and co. thought of a 30th level wizard as a lot more powerful than a 20th level wizard, or if he too just thought of them as being roughly equal but with a few more spells.

That was all wizards got in 2E, as they progressed in levels: more spells.

Young dragons may not, but any wyrm or great wyrm would probably be able to hold their own. Most of them have fairly substantial magic resistance, immunities, and saving throws, and can dish out some considerable damage. One on one, my money would be on the dragon.

CR 13 mages have a decent chance of tearing CR 20 noncasters apart. Anything with a decent caster level and a decent spell selection is going to cause problems for dragons with poor CL and/or HD. Being a viallin doesn't mean you need to be Dr. Claw.

Assuming that the scenario favors those CR13 mages. Dragons are intelligent and have a lot of abilities of their own... They don't just sit around and wait for someone to walk up and start attacking.

I don't understand all this fascination and overestimation of phaerimm capabilities. They're baddies just like the rest. Just because a very old phaerimm has the spellcasting power of a high level mage doesn't mean every phaerimm is a high level mage. It's like saying all dragons are great wyrms or all humans are Chosens.

It depends on the dragon, honestly. There are some out there that I'd happily bet on if they were battling phaerimm, and besting them in battle isn't the only way to survive being in their presence.

They're NG dragons that prefer to hoard art and such instead of coins, and they also dig philosophy.

The electrum dragon is detailed in the monstrous compendium and rather fascinating it is too, great NPC material it must be said.

Asides from the compendium the adventure book in the boxed set describes an encounter with a sleeping red dragon, whose wyrmling happens to be frozen magically in suspended animation in a shaft dropping into the lair. The lair itself contains a fantastical horde of treasure that adventurers will struggle to move from the ruins. The adventure asks more questions than it answers, like why was the young dragon frozen in that spell, why didn't it's parent do anything about it? Anyway it needs a little work but like a lot of the short scenarios that came with the 2nd ed. boxed sets the standards were never too high.

Were there any dragons living in Myth Drannor around the mid-1300s?
The Emerald Sage Posted - 25 Dec 2015 : 17:04:52
Thanks, that link you posted was the online resource I had mentioned in my opening post so I have those details already. Maybe they could do in a pinch but what I'm really after are the full monstrous compendium pages from the Myth Drannor set so I'm hoping that someone has a .pdf version they might share. I really want the full write-up and crucially the illustrations that accompany them.

Thanks again.

Here is a link to the entire 2nd Edition Collection of Monsters. The monsters you want will be in there.

http://www.lomion.de/cmm/_index.php

Doomsphere
This ghost-like undead beholder is created by magical explosions. For this I would just use any beholder you want to use, but in an undead form.

Aratha
#AP =1
AC =3
MV =11
HD =9
THAC0 =11
# AT =4
Dmg/AT =1-10(x4)
Morale =Elite (16)
XP Value =6,000
Aratha grasp and hold prey with their 8-foot clawed tentacles that can lash out 20 feet. An aratha does not bite opponents, but chews flesh torn from prey by its tentacles.
