Posted - 13 Dec 2015 : 20:43:03 Okay, so my twins turn 8 tomorrow (Fun Fact: Our oldest turns 16 tomorrow as well). As promised, they get to play D&D now (YAY!). So devised a good start to the campaign (3.5 rules, because THAC0 might fry their brains):
Beneath the Twisted Tower Sword of the Dales Secret of Spiderhaunt Return of Randal Morn
Now for my HELP! part...
I am thinking of using a portal later with the Sword of the Dales to send them into the Desert of Desolation series, eventually bringing them back to Nightmare Keep (sorry kids!). But I need something good to fill the gap between Randal Morn and Desert of Desolation. Any ideas? |

Posted - 13 Dec 2015 : 23:49:12 Not too worried about their survival. Both their older sister and mom are seasoned veterans. I know I have plenty of sessions prior to the end of four adventures, however, I like to plan well ahead. If it looks like PC's are going "off map", I usually throw in a good hook on the fly to keep them on path.
I think I should clarify the portal idea. In the adventure Secret of Spiderhaunt, it is revealed that the arch-shadow Gothyl is tied to the actual Sword of the Dales (only to the DM). At the end of Return of Randal Morn, the PC's can keep the sword. If they do, Gothyl will "lead" them places, unbeknownst to the PCs. My idea was she leads them to a portal to the Raurin Desert (eventually) for her quest.
But what I really need is something to do between roughly levels 6 and 10-12...while trying to avoid anything that was a part of a trilogy (i.e. Shadowdale...either adventure). Anyone recall any Dungeon adventures?

As to your campaign ideas, you have four adventures that they need to survive before they even encounter a portal.
If you get though the four with players a portal certainly can be found. You might write your own for transition between Randal Morn and Desert of Desolation.
There is always the problem of players going off the map. Your plan indicates that the adventurers will find portal in Sword of the Dales, however will not use it for some reason until after Return of Randal Morn. There are a few problems with a planned campaign, the adventures might die, might not find the portal, if finding the portal step though it at once (or even worst one step though separating the party).
I have no idea how quick you expect the game sessions to go, however a transition idea might be better if you get though the first one and have a better idea of how your new players are going to adventure.
There are many ways to work in an adventure, more so if you are going to portals. You could sent them to Ravenloft or Dragonlance with portals.
See how the first few go, do not do a Drangonlance type plan that the adventure descripiction stats "After you kill..." . The one thing that bothered me was DM instructions of being no matter how good the PCs killed the BEV (Big Evil Villain) the DM must invent some reason the the BEV was still living a session or maybe two later.
