Posted - 28 May 2013 : 01:51:45 Hello guys, I have a question my players are now in mid-paragon (we play 4th), currently they are in Suzail, and they have hoarded a small fortune in gp. they are about to leave for a very dangerous mission and they wanted to deposit their money. One of them suggested, instead, to invest those gp in something.
they didn't specify in which way they wanted to invest... a tavern, maybe? a weapon/armor smith? an inn? a "bank"? a castle/fortress?
the party is friend with the Greatgaunt family in Suzail... maybe they could invest in their horse-raising business...
do you have any suggestion (if Faerun related, even better!)?
is there any written rule, in a handbook or maagazine, about this kind of investment? i really don't know how to handle this type of investment.
could you please help me?
thanks |

Posted - 29 May 2013 : 07:11:32 The book "Power of Faerūn" has a section called Play the Market, that is all about guilds, and market goods, methods and means of shipping, economics, forming Trade Consortiums and dealing with conflics.
There's very little rules; just lots of advice and information about the Realms. What rules do exist focus onusing the Leadership Feat (it's based on Third Edition Dungeons & Dragons rules) to help make an income and to pick Cohorts and Followers.
The Third Edition Dungeon Master's Guide II has some rules and information on running a business.
If I find anything else, I'll let you know what book/source I found it in. |

Well Jeremy, I think my players will be interested in roleplaying "major issues" about their investments, but they sure do love rolling some dice... maybe the roleplay will come into play to stem a great loss (due to bad rolls).
Are there written rules about "investments" in previous editions? Could you kindly point them out?
My major issue is not having a "basis for comparison": if i had an old table with... wages of mundane workers and activities, wages of commercial companies and likes, i could figure out something credible for my little campaign...
Thank you again, guys, you are all very kind. |

Posted - 28 May 2013 : 03:00:04 Your players can hire factors (i.e. business agents) to invest a portion of their money for them.
Since the characters are friends of the Greatgaunt noble family, perhaps that family can recommend two or three factors that the PCs can hire.
Investing, no matter how it's done, should be something you talk with your players about before they do it. Are they interested in roleplaying through any problems that come up? Or are they simply interested in making choices about where to invest and then rolling the dice to see if they make any money after a certain amount of time has gone by?
I don't know of any rules for this, but I will keep an eye out. |

A Tavern might be a good idea if they get an honest manager and workers.
Fortress only works if they collect taxes and costs are less then the costs, that is making a dominion. It also requires trustworthy person in charge of good if not lawful people in order to earn anything.
Starting any business like smith requires cost setup, then share of profit. It can work of course, however the PCs will not be keeping the books.
Gold is easy to disappear and the PCs are unlikely if told NPC31 owes 3 gp to try to chase down the person even if the true facts are the NP31 owes 50 gp.
House raising, like all of the above might work or might have fraud, shrinkage and over reported costs.
Your PCs clearly can do alignment checks, skry and so on to protect their investment. So as DM there clearly is possible you can make it work well for them, offer them options of a few possibilities and decide if the investment works.
For 4th Edition I have not seen any written rules for investments as such.
The general guideline was to invest you in yourself or your domain if you could establish one. There are things like trading goods that should have a profit but also risk. |
