Posted - 14 Feb 2012 : 02:24:19 I need an idea for a relic of Sharess. What it is and what it does (and maybe it's background). It doesn't have to be anything too great. It will be kept in a small rural temple, or rather a small shrine, dedicated to The Dancing Lady. The shrine is ran by an eighth-ish level Cleric and her acolytes. I plan for it to be stolen and my players (all 1st level, but kinda high powered) will have to get it back. I'm searching for an idea that would scream "Relic of Sharess!" And as for the powers of the relic, something equivalent to 10th level magic would be good. Any suggestions stats-wise are welcome, but if it's not your forte, just fluff ideas are enough. I'm playing 3.P. |

Posted - 03 Mar 2012 : 18:56:24 Sorry Imp.
My thoughts on the topic is that it should be something to do with fetish-sex, because it is Sharess, but also have nod to her baast-nature.
A Cat-O-Nine-Tails?
Something that can deliver either agony or ecstasy (along the line of the Agiel used by Mord Sith in the SoT novels). |

Posted - 03 Mar 2012 : 10:09:35 I think about relations between the form and function, which somehow reminds me about the current arc of Eerie Cuties (Chapter 7, featuring an item boosting Succubus powers right from the start) whenever this thread's title pops in "active topics". Is it badwrong? |

That sounds like a SW character....
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.
My Interpretations: Brillig - time of year (I'm thinking fall) the wabe - wetlands Slithy Toves - some sort of small, sinuous reptile mimsy - somewhere between melancholy and whimsy borogoves - a type of swamp-fey mome rath - the spirits of drowned children (mome rath = moaning wraith) outgrabe - the heart-rending cries of the mome raths
The first (and last) stanza is to establish the background - the rest is describing ONE creature (IMO).

Tunnels & Trolls also had both 'beasties'.
I can't really understand that, since its quite obvious (to me) that the 'bandersnatch' is a part of the jabberwock (like its beak, or some-such). 'Jub Jub bird' is another often used - I interpret that as just another name for the same infamous creature (the Jabberwock itself).
Funny... I always figured them all for separate beasties, myself... now I'll have to re-read the poem to see if I can find your interpretation. Not that it's a great ordeal or anything...

You'll succeed in making me write something other than a board post, if you're not careful. Edit: the only question is the nom de plume... Jack Carroll, Lewis Vance, Jack Lewis, or Carroll Vance? |

I have no idea what it would do, but it sounds like another thing that could be a Sharess relic.
Do you think her clergy would work with the Gondmen to create a Wundabra?

Now Slithy Toves, Borogoves, and my personal favorite - Mome Raths (I say 'wraiths') - are all up for grabs, and separate critters.

EDIT: I just thought of something related (Xaviera's post jogged my memory) - Orion's Belt from the MIB movie. Not D&D, but a pretty cool idea (an incredible source of power hidden in plain site on a cat's collar). |

Posted - 02 Mar 2012 : 20:48:50 A relic for Sharess?
What about the miniature staff of female pleasurement? Its a very smooth marble rod about 12 inches long with a slightly bulbous end. Its been favored by many high priestesses and is rumored to cure hysteria in women. |

I would look at the real world Bast and items people might have held sacred to her. |

Posted - 29 Feb 2012 : 16:52:20 I like the idea of xaeyruudh's cat choker/necklace, but it seems like a high-level item that might not be appropriate for first-level PCs.
Other possibilities might include an earring worn by a famous priestess (+3 Cha), a small statuette of the Goddess that performs bless & remove curse and possibly minor cure spells, a ring or necklace that allows the wearer to polymorph self into a cat, or a golden belt or bracelet which is actually the infamous girdle of sex change (always good for a laugh!).

Posted - 15 Feb 2012 : 20:03:17 Well no, it doesn't. Than again maybe it does. I did not read the entire thing. I really have very little interest in Sharess. In any case I thought it might be helpful. |

Posted - 14 Feb 2012 : 21:37:52 It's been entirely too long since I've read Jabberwocky. I didn't even recognize that it was a specific reference; thought you'd made up the term.
And since it's already inspiring an item, I'm going to carry on. Cuz that's how I roll. |

Posted - 14 Feb 2012 : 19:56:38 Frumious Bandersnatch?! Haha! I studiously avoided going there. I'm glad someone did it for me. |
xaeyruudh |
Posted - 14 Feb 2012 : 19:34:39 I'm quite sure Bast would appreciate the double entendre.
Frumious Bandersnatch sounds decidedly gnomish. A gnome follower of Bast? Perhaps with some Mask in the mix. Along with Gond, which always goes without saying. Hope you don't mind if I come up with something. |

how about a choker/necklace that lets the wearer telepathically communicate with and dominate cats -- animal type only, no magical beasts. communication is two-way and at-will, but limited to one cat per round. domination is an activated power and requires concentration, and is also limited to one cat at a time. once per day, the wearer can see through a single cat's eyes, and hear through its ears, for 1 minute, provided that the cat and the wearer remain on the same plane. the death of the cat also breaks the clairvoyance/clairaudience effects. no idea what the level would be, but its use is pretty limited in scope.
Call it the 'Pussy Galore' (my homage to James Bond)
She is part cat, after all.
I also thought of a 'Frumious Bandersnatch' - I have no idea what it is, or what it might possibly do, but it just sounds like something that would be a 'holy relic' of Sharess (and thats my Homage to Lewis Caroll and his Jabberwocky).

Posted - 14 Feb 2012 : 07:38:12 the power to make and unmake thrones, without laying waste to the land... just how magic should be.
although if it's an artifact type of relic, it should have some additional role-playing notes.
the wearer attracts cats, and will thus find it difficult to move around populated areas without attracting notice. the cats will follow the wearer around, periodically jockey for the wearer's attention, and often get underfoot. will also yowl when hungry, wander off one at a time to hunt, and lovingly present the wearer with slain food-offerings upon their return. dogs and other predators will treat the wearer as if he/she were a cat.
cats who are repeatedly treated harshly with mental orders to "scram" or who are injured as a result of following the wearer's orders, will leave and will henceforth be immune to the choker's powers. they may, especially if several cats are thus rejected, attack the "loyal" cats who continue to follow the wearer, creating caterwauling scenes that can follow a PC all the way across a city. depending on the status of Bast/Sharess in your campaign, the goddess herself may manifest (always at the most inopportune time conceivable) and directly punish those who abuse her beloved felines.
regardless of what item you use, or whether you make it an artifact or just a normal unique magic item with religious significance, i think worshipers of Bast/Sharess will be predisposed to respect and help the wearer, if they can see the relic and recognize it... or if they see an army of cats following the PC. priestesses of that goddess will always sense the presence of the relic, even if it's concealed; their reaction will depend on the apparent nature of the PC.
just my thoughts. |

Posted - 14 Feb 2012 : 04:20:06 Well there's,
Shadow Maniple (8th) [MIC, p. 133] Caster level: 7th Body Slot: Arms "This wristband seethes with ever-shifting shadows. Its touch feels like frozen silk. Benefit: Casting a spell with the Shadow descriptor, a Mystery (shadowcaster class, ToM), or a spell that uses that Shadow Weave, you may activate this item that heals a number of HP equal to the spell's level. This can function 3/day.
Shadow Tapestry (? level) [Cormyr: Tearing of the Weave] Benefit: This works like a magic carpet that can hold up to 4 people (about 500 lbs) but the catch is, it only works in night or shadowy conditions. Once daylight or a similiar spell touches the tapestry, it stops functioning for 24-hrs. The campaign it's in is designed for 4th-9th level so it might be appropriate.
Starry Gnosis [Cormyr: Tearing of the Weave] This artifact is pretty powerful, giving the user the ability to dominate a target. Since I don't have the book on me, it's harder to go into mechanical detail, but it's listed in that adventure. Pretty interesting too.
Spectral Dagger (10th) [MIC, p.59 Caster level: 5th "This pocked and notched piece of yellowed bone seems to have once been used as the pommel for a dagger, though the blade is now missing." Benefit: instead of doing normal damage, the weapon has a consistant Chill Touch spell affixed to the blade with the Fort DC 11 partial damage or Will DC 11 negates.
Hope some of this helps.

Shar had tried to assassinate her as she had Ibrandul due to her reluctance to be completely dominated by the goddess of shadow, but Sune doused her with a chalice filled with waters from Arvandor's Evergold that restored Sharess' beauty and willpower, giving her the will and the edge to rebel against her mistress |
