In what parts of Faerun would a War Troll mercenary (probably a half-dragon) be AT LEAST tolerated (not attacked on sight, but not necessarily trusted either), if not outright welcomed?
I know that in places like Underdark, Westgate or Thay War Trolls could freely conduct their business, but I was thinking about realms that are less on the "dark" side of alignment.

War Trolls need an area of the Realms to
serve as a home region. I've been using the
Thar coldlands and the Ride, but it doesn't
quite feel right.

Nah, not really. It's a War Troll.

It's not a half-troll. It's a War Troll that's maybe, just maybe a half-dragon.

As Eilserus mentioned, Zhentil Keep comes to mind... But a drow city would also do. There is a troll mercenary in the 3e FRCS who roams about on the northern shore of the Lake of Steam. That character is more or less accepted in the region, so a half-troll might have even an easier time.. though it depends on the non-troll half I guess...

Oh yeah, BTW. It's pre-Sellplague, so no 4th ed (we play 3.P).
Him coming from Sythillisian empire is a good suggestion, but that's not important to this topic. I'm only interested were he would be more-or-less accepted.

He/She could hail from the Sythsillian empire down by Amn. I could see a character like this also being able to possibly walk the streets in Zhentil Keep or maybe even Mulmaster. Waterdeep might be another, but I suspect it would operate in Downshadow? I think the city absorbed the first level of Undermountain, but I'm not sure on that one. I think 4E seemed to somewhat relax racial restrictions on what types of races can interact in a city setting. Personally, I'd pick whatever city you want, and if you have to, tailor a mini-adventure that allows the character access to the city. Having a troll around and occasionally in the employ of the city guard or other power would allow the disposal of "problem" people when they want to keep it quiet. They may not trust the troll, but if they can have him handle things that can't be traced back to them and only have to allow him access to town they might go for it. I'd imagine he'd wrap himself up so where you'd only see a green pointy nose sticking out of clothing, and maybe clawed hands. People may not recognize him as a troll while he's in the city, but they most likely won't mess with the weird green skinned giant of a "man".
