Posted - 03 Feb 2012 : 18:03:32 Imagine the proceeding scenario: Some powerful force wants to conquer the entire Realms. It is a particularly strong demon lord or one of the archdevils, doesn't really matter at the moment. What's important is that it wields an incredible personal power, but it doesn't have any armies (yet). It takes leadership over monster hordes (either trough deceit, bribery or fear) and then starts overthrowing civilizations. My questions are as follows (for the sake of this dicussion lets assume it's some very powerful ex-demon lord that got released from a loooooong imprisonment somewhere on Toril and now he wants to rule it whole and turn it into his new Abyss realm): 1. Could the deities go to Toril and personally deal with this global threat? (Ao is out of the question. For all the later questions assume that the gods aren't interfering personally, but of course instruct their churches to stop the evil.) 2. Where would it be wisest to start such conquest? 3. What monsters/organizations/powers would likely ally themselves to the conqueror? Of course not right away, but after he "persuades" them. 4. What would be the most likely responses from the powers of Toril? For example Larloch has his plans that stretch many centuries. What would be his reaction? 5. How powerful should the mastermind behind the entire conquering be? What CR roughly should he be? That's all questions for now, but I'll probably come up with some more. |

But if some extra-planer uber-baddie started wreaking havoc on their world, I think even the evil deities would want a piece of him. However, direct confronation would probably be out of the question (no-one wants more Helmlands).
2. Someplace remote, that no-one cares about. For instance, if something took over the Tuigan and made trouble in the Wastes, it would be quite awhile before anyone became aware of the seriousness of the threat.
3. Monsters, mostly. The evil types would be even more adverse to stopping this - they do not 'follow orders' (Szass Tam, Manshoon, etc). If the 'Big Bad' somehow convinced Orcs it is Gruumsh (or if it really is Gruumsh), then that would help tremendously.
4. I have always felt the Chosen already had a plan in case of this eventually, probably requested by Mystra/Mystryl, who in-turn was probably prompted to do so by Ao. I would assume that there is a 'Doomsday protocol', that would include such beings as Larloch in their plans (because good and evil would be on the same side in an 'invasion Toril' scenario).
5. Primordial, because its power-level is unknown, and theoretically could even rival Ao's. Anything else (Fiend-lord, Deity, etc) is a known factor, and you would need an 'unknown' to pull this off (otherwise the gods would just squish him/her like a bug).
However, a deity or archfiend (or Archfey, etc) could possibly be this type of threat, if it somehow managed to get some sort of Cosmic-class Artifact (that being the level above 'greater'). I am talking Infinity-Gauntlet class firepower (maybe something left-over from the first Godswar?) |
