Posted - 29 Dec 2003 : 01:16:06 Most of my characters would rather fall in battle than die on a bed of old age. But i had a character once that i would have truely loved to have died of old age...poor fella.

Posted - 19 Dec 2003 : 23:49:08 That is a character that I always want to have. If your game is going on for 4 or more winters in real life, you can have a strong hold or even ministry duty for a city or crown. You can be old and wise and go to a last campaign to forfill your destiny because you don't want to die on bed because of your old age or you can strive for living more searching for longevity potions and other things that can make you live forever. |

Posted - 17 Dec 2003 : 14:01:02 Lets see..... I have played some humans in my day. But. The funnest one I played was the poison immune humans. He was a fighter theif in second ed. He had been gased and poisoned so much, that even instant death poisons could not kill him ( we used tolerance rules). This gave him quite a bit of an advantage over most traps. And thus lived a very long time. In his 80's ( even old for humans then lol) He finally died In his sleep... I played him for 3 years real time.
From his 50's to his 80's Erick Longwalk ( hehe ... other wise known as slime... you can guess why lol). Used the methods of conning others into doing the hard work while he ran off to hide, or set to disarming traps and such. Like a good theif. Even as a older chap he still was able to parry quite well and made use of it many times. As for killing through attacks he had to give such acts up in his 40's after suffering a rather nasty attack that took one of his legs. After having it replaced by wood, sinc ehe didnt trust mages or clerics - due to the fact a past parnter in our party was a insane necromancer... and the cleric was trying to server an elder god from the Love Craft faction, He stayed a gimp instead of having it fixed. In his fighter theif mix his normal methods of battle were to ground himself into the shadows, or just plain work his way into the back of his own forces. The high parry rating that came on his side, was added to the effect of both of his blades. One was a Broad Sword ( +5 defender/Flamming), And a short sword (+5 defending/Ice Brand). Yep thats about all I remember of him I could go into some storys about him but when he died some hench men stole his loot and proclaimed that his name would go on.... So they in game wise took his loot and used it to rob people. I was so proud of them lol. Someone adopted his name, his son and second in command, and took contol of his necklace (6 out of ten charges left on Meteor Swarm Rechargable by leaving it out on a night when a comet is in view), And his Bracers, basically the bracers added the effectiveness of 4 dex. After a bit of time the old son got back the swords to. And whoop ..... To this day inthat groups FR games that guild is still feared LOL. |

Posted - 17 Dec 2003 : 07:20:26 Actually, I know the players where quite moved by the whole event...it is a very special and unique role-playing experience indeed when you run a Memorial Service, instead of a regular combat session...

Posted - 17 Dec 2003 : 07:10:13 I was honoured.
After the end of the war, there was a special funeral service set aside for Kevis, and a small memorial was constructed in memory of all he had done...it was a very grand affair...Elminster even attended...

Posted - 17 Dec 2003 : 07:05:37 Now THAT is funny. Too bad though, the Player could have done so much, even if the front line was not the best place for him. A pity really... Alas none of my characters ever reach old age (or even medium age... Hell most of them die before they could even get enought stubble on their chin to the the party Dwarf to stop calling them boy or young'un). Yes most of my characters only meet untimely ends because of a lack of luck... or over abundance of bad luck. Sage, you should feel honored to witness an adventurer's end that isn't from sword point, magick, wandering hungery monsters, treacherous party members, explosion, rat bites, etc. Could have had a great role play opertunity with funeral too... How I dispise and envy you all! |

Posted - 17 Dec 2003 : 06:16:33 Indeed I have...
Kevis el-Farjo, a (very rich) Strongheart halfling and former merchant from Calimport who had ran a extraordinaily luractive exotic perfume-trading company for about 10 years. He was in fact a Harper spy sent by the organisation to learn all he could about the rumors of increased Lizardman activity in the city, and frequent Dragonship trips to and from Chult.
When the rumors proved true, and the Chultan Lizardmen (led by their undead-Slaan Sorcerer-Priests) began their (be aware that these are my own Lizardman creation and not related in any way to FR reptile-folk) 'Crusade' against the Empires of the Sands in 1370 DR, el-Farjo was forced to give up reins of his 'trading' company into the hands of his son, and return to his life as a Harper. This is where he enters my campaign as a pre-created PC for a player of mine.
He was to report all he had learned to the massed Harper and Moonstar force that was building outside the borders of Calimshan preparing to attack the Lizardmen force before they landed in Calimport.
Without going into details about that particular battle, Kevis 'adventured' throughout Calimshan with his associate party of Harper agents (other PC's) which comprised of two Harper Scouts (PrC), a Harper Sorcerer (another PrC), and two Clerics of Mielikki. Other than the many duties they were to perform for the Harper/Moonstar forces during the 3 years of the war, they waged a series of hit-and-run battles against the advanced beach-head the forces of the Lizardmen had constructed in and around the 'conquered' city of Almraiven.
The war, and the associate battles the group fought in eventually sapped most of Kevis' strength (he was already 142 at the time war broke out), and so it came to the point where his injuries and old age eventually reduced his capacity to fight effectively in any confrontation the party faced.
The player became frustrated that he could not contribute to all of the battles, and sometimes refused to turn up to gaming sessions...it was then that I decided to 'retire' the PC using the 'roll of life expectancy'. Kevis died three months later in his sleep during a lull in the fighting to retake most of Calimshan.
