Hi,

according to my experience as player and DM, ALL the released adventures are extremely difficult, but which one is the one you think most dangerous??

We had the most deaths ( 3!!! ) in the "forge of Fury" - ropers and even very small dragons at this level are just lethal....

looking forward to your replies

I'd have to say Rappan Athuk Reloaded from the folks over at Necromancer Games. 13 levels of dungeon crawling madness with Orcus himself at the end, fuly supported by minions and other demons. It was a very limited 3.5 print run, and IIRC, it sold out at the Gen Con at which it was introduced. Currently, the only way to get it is a $40.00US downloadable pdf!

I dont remember the exact details, I do remember having to come up with quite afew ways to introduce new characters though. I think we may have had acouple of siblings turn up. All my death board records is deaths per chapter (in a five bar gate) with an initial as to player so i know who had the most charcters die.

One death I remember was my now wives character how the party chose to kill so she wouldnt be turned into a vampire, the vampire was doing it right infront of the party. More memories may come back if i re-read the adventure if your interested.

32 characters? Did they generate new characters each time and resurrection was not possible :O ?

I am considering trying to make it 4th edition....somehow

So, just how nerfed is the 3E update of Tomb of Horrors, anyway? I've just downloaded it, and haven't had time to look at it (or even unzip the archive) yet. The black-mouthed demon face doesn't spit sweetness and light, does it?

I played through the original Tomb of Horrors in 1st edition, and in 2nd edition I ran Return to the Tomb of Horrors (complete with a trek through the original tomb as published for 1E) as part of the grand-finale trilogy of a five-year campaign (played every week at least once over this time; we were in college). Early in 3E I was part of a group that played through City of the Spider Queen, and we had a similar experience to that reported by Immortalis... at least one of us was creating a new character every session, or so it seemed; I don't recall the exact body count. At the time, I just assumed it was because 3E was designed to be higher-kill-rate than 1E or 2E, but I think most of it was that we had a sadistic DM and we were all still learning the new system for 3.x; we still had a blast, despite the deaths; in fact, because we were learning a new system, the deaths allowed us each to explore multiple character options, and that was half of the fun. Still, if you're using the adventure in a continuing campaign in which you want the same characters continuing through, it might not be the best choice.

I must concur. Age of Worms = Great yet deadly.

The famous and insanely deadly PC meat grinder known as Tomb of Horrors was updated from 1E to 3E, and you can get it as a free download over at WotC.

I don't know if it's the toughest one out there, but if your players haven't seen the classic AD&D module it might be worth a look.

Also, I agree that the Age of Worms adventure path from Dungeon magazine is amazing if you can get all the installments.

I love these: Rise of the Runelord's Obituary Thread

I think every AP has one.
Jakuta Khan Posted - 15 Jan 2012 : 14:01:17
well, i am just about to run city of spider queen with an all humanoid, yes, who would have thought, goblinoid party.

I think they can, just by their race, negotiate some encounters rather better than "standard" player races, while they will have also some real trouble with otherwise harmless ones.

but I still am thrilled with 32 dead chars... were these to player stupidity or really due to the tough setup of the set only?
Immortalis Posted - 26 Dec 2011 : 18:14:52
The age of worms is a great adventure. We only did the first few but having read them all it does look to get difficult, but great.

32 characters is tough even just reading it made me start a deaths board, thats how I know how many died. I keep it even now, from the board I know that only 2 PC's made it out alive.

From my experience the last few parts of the Age of Worms
Jakuta Khan Posted - 24 Dec 2011 : 11:19:28
wow 32 chars is tough.

Immortalis Posted - 24 Dec 2011 : 10:15:51
I have run 'City of the Spider Queen' and even though I thought it was great it did cost the lives of 32 characters to complete. Most of the players did enjoy it but my wife has said that if I even joke about running it again it would be grounds for divorce. (It was pretty evil).

havent player or run any of the others mentioned, sorry.
Ozreth Posted - 24 Dec 2011 : 05:42:07
I havent played it but I always hear City of the Spider Queen is the hardest.

Hmm....well I can't go by experience due to my severe lack of published material for 3E/v3.5 adventures. However, I've heard that the 3.0 supplement Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil is pretty darn difficult and I actually did a bit of adventuring there. It was pretty difficult though I can't say if it was due to the actual adventure or DMing practices. I think it was a little bit from both columns because he didn't believe in "balanced" parties in terms of level. So it wasn't unsusal to have two 6th level PCs, an 8th level PC, a 11th level PC all doing the same adventure. Suffice to say I only did it a little bit before I got disgruntled and left.

Also, I've heard City of the Spider Queen (3.0) was ridiculously difficult and really requires some party synergy to successfully accomplish.

A 3rd one that I hear is very difficult is the 3E's Tomb of Horrors.
