Posted - 07 Oct 2011 : 15:36:34 My question may not seem like a Realms related item, but it could possibly be.
In the original Monster Manual it gives a listing for a Werewolf lord in the section on Lycanthropes, it also lists the stats and abilities for the Lord in all of his forms.
My question is concerning his Challenge Rating, in the book it lists it as a CR of 14, but if you add the Level Adjustment; Class Levels; and his Racial hit Dice from the Dire Wolf, his CR seems to be much higher than the 14 that is listed; it seems to me his actual CR should be a 19 or higher.
Which is correct? |

Posted - 13 Oct 2011 : 19:34:26 From the SRD:quote: Challenge Rating: By class level or base creature, modified according to the HD of the base animal: 1 HD or 2 HD, +2; 3 HD to 5 HD, +3; 6 HD to 10 HD, +4; 11 HD to 20 HD, +5; 21 or more HD, +6.
So Base creature is a level 10 Fighter, so CR 10. Animal form is a Dire Wolf, so 6 base HD = +4 CR. That's how they got CR 14. Other than that, Rhewtani is right. CR has almost nothing to do with LA.

Particularly, when things like animal hit die come into play. Essentially, he probably started at CR 19 and in playtesting was demonstrated to not be that level of a threat. Certain abilities, particularly non-combat ones or limited use ones, can often warrant a higher LA, but lower CR.
I think the most basic example is a monster with wish 1/day versus a PC with wish 1/day. In the monster, chances are you're dealing with 1 wish. With the PC you're dealing with 100s of uses of it. |
