I know this isn't exactly Forgotten Realmish, but I thought this would be a good place to ask.

I have planned to throw the characters in my campaign to Sigil (after I played Planescape: Torment, for inspiration) once they are of appropiate level. Now I'd need to know, what ways there are to get to Sigil from Faerūn? Is it done by just normal Plane shift-spells, portals or something else?

And what's more important, I just don't know enough of Sigil to make characters have a good time there. In what book(s) is Sigil described? Is there a specific book just for Sigil, or is it in Manual of the Planes?

I thank you from answers.

If you can wait a few more weeks, the PSCS 3e team will be releasing their next part of the 3e PS conversion...a tome detailing Sigil, pre- and post- Faction War. From what I have seen, it's at 100+ pages at the moment.

I'll let you know more as it happens.

(Also, for current information about Sigil, read through my above post. I have already answered this question.)

Ahh...this is always one of the most precious moments in a campaign......the first time journey to Sigil.

Besides the normally associated spells which grant planar travel, there are a number of other ways to make the trip to Sigil, both mundane and exciting. As the Bookwyrm suggested, the Celestial (Infinite) Staircase is a good idea for those just starting out in a FR/PS campaign. Most of the work is already done for you.

The random placement of portals across Faerun could also be another option. You could base one entire adventure around finding a portal to Sigil that was described in some ancient tome of knowledge that your PC's collected months or even years ago. Delays in the translation of the text could be the suggested reason for only coming across this specific information now.

I have a few other ideas, most of which are the generally accepted practice of introducing Sigil and the Planes. They were crafted by some members (myself included) of the PS online community, but I will send them to you via Ethereal Mail.

Now as to information, the most basic source is the Sigil and Beyond tome that comes with the PS boxed set. It give a semi-detailed discussion about the city, running adventures/campaigns in Sigil and other interesting topic. It could be just what you need. For the more advanced form of Sigil adventure, the In the Cage tome provides everything you would want to know about the city, (even some things you didn't), and expands upon earlier material. Along with the ideas that I am going to send you, I will also send you some links to websites that contain a wealth of information about Sigil that is mostly fan-created.

Second-lastly, very little is written about Sigil in the MotP 3e (except for a sentence-reference) so I really wouldn't bother using that time, unless you plan to take your party outside of Sigil and into the Planes.

And lastly, try not to involve the factions of Sigil into your adventures this early, they have the potential to unbalance a starting planar campaign.

The easiest thing to do might be to modify the opener of the 2e adventure For Duty and Deity. That uses the Celestial Staircase. The biggest hangup would be why the clerics guarding that one would let you on. I suppose you could always create your own, which is kept even more secret.
