Posted - 16 Aug 2010 : 22:17:13 I am running a 3.5 FR campaign for the second time around and I am just loving it. The content, the lore, the heroes and villains of FR are amazing. In the previous campaign I used the Sons of Gruumsh and Mysteries of the Moonsea as my foundation but this time around I wanted to go East with a whole new cast of characters. I dug around in my memory bank from my teens for modules I either remember running or seeing and came to Illefarn. So far Illefarn has been a blast for myself and the party, albeit the maps were a little harder to work with than they are now but I have the hang of it. We are closing in on the end Illefarn adventure and the players advancing to 4th Level and I sense they are wondering when is the DM going to hint about our next endeavor, is this Illefarn business tied to a grander storyline, etc. I don't want to sound cliche but I have information overload right now because the lore can be overwhelming and connecting it to all the products published is mind blowing really. So I am really in need of some advice or guidance here from some experienced FR DMs. Where do I take these players next within the Sword Coast region?
Where do I take the party of players about to reach 4th Level who about to finish up in Daggerford? Are there any modules out there that seem to fit into a Sword Coast Campaign that are for the next level range from Under Illefarn? |

Posted - 20 Aug 2010 : 00:37:25 How about the player's get picked by the Duke of Daggerford to deliver a trade letter or such like to one of the cities on the Moonshae Isles. Once there they find them selves involved in a werewolf hunt or maybe even a whole pack of them . Can you see it now? A heavy wet fog covers the moors of the Moonshae's, the moon is full but very little light can pierce the bone chilling mist. A howl from somewhere in the darkness makes the adventures blood run cold for in their hearts they know that the hunters have become the hunted. ......... .... Ahh....Can I play too?

Posted - 18 Aug 2010 : 19:35:36 Zhent - Mere of Dead Men is a pretty awesome series and could definitely be adapted to 3.5. Let me know if you need help tracking down those dungeon issues. |

Posted - 17 Aug 2010 : 14:10:05 Awesome I'm going to look into all these items as well as check some of my Goodman Games Dungeon Crawl Classics (plenty of modules there). I am going to check the Volo's guide also.
Looking forward to being on these forums more often now that I have found them :>). |

Posted - 17 Aug 2010 : 10:24:40 I used to run a long-running campaign based around Waterdeep and Daggerford. Player characters never even left the vicinity - I basically populated the area between Waterdeep and Dragonspear Castle with the numerous "generic villages with dungeon annex" that were so prevalent in Dungeon magazine. My advice would be to get one of those, plant the village in the area (or, my preferred option, attach the dungeon annex to an existing village, lik The Way Inn, Bowshot, et al.)
If you are city-minded, you can have the PCs go to Waterdeep (as caravan escort, as part of a diplomatic mission from the Duke to the the Lords, etc.). There's a couple of actual (The House of Stone, Dragonspear Castle) or potential (the ruins of Delimbiyan) super-dungeons (if you need any outside Undermountain), for which you can probably use a generic super-dungeon module (Castle Greyhawk, the World's Largest Dungeon, etc.).
Depending on what year you play in, you can get the PCs involved in the local events scene. My campaign ran from the early 1350s, and I included a graduak build-up towards the 1st Dragonspear war (bands of orcs and monsters travelling to the area, cultists moving in to try and open the gate to Baator, that kind of thing).
I positively love the general area! |

Posted - 17 Aug 2010 : 09:16:59 Just curious, do you own Volos guide to the Sword Coast? It is still possible to download it for free one WotC's page if I am correct (link please?). Not the best place to start if you are suffering from information overload, but you might get a few hints.
As for modules, I would actually try to modify a non-Realmsian module from D&D 1es. or Dragon. Most of the Realms adventures are not that good. Do you have any of them available in addition to Under Illefarn?
But the best solution would probably be to make your own adventure based on some of the information given in a Realms product. The Western Heartlands and its surrounding areas should be able to handle anything you can think of.
And as for information overload, just take it easy and don't kill yourself trying to Remember everything, it just makes the whole DM job more of a chore than fun. |
